I had to get it so I could keep running the Web Components plugin, which displays my Swann cams on my PC.

I was unable to get it to work on any other browser, but this worked.

Why don't you turn off the updates?  It's very easy to do.

I haven't experienced any problems with Firefox updates.

That said, it seems ESR is meant to be a "more stable" version in that new features are not pushed out while bug fixes are. Disabling updates for network software is a Very Bad Idea.

The esr version sounds like a good idea.   As for updates,  I consider letting any software auto-update to be a very bad idea.   I review the update and decide if I really need it.  Then I make sure it hasn't blown anyone else up.   Then I make sure I have a path to revert to what I had,  just in case.   Then, maybe,  I'll allow it.

I haven't had any problems with Firefox. It'll be pried from my cold, dead hands.
