I just finished a complete rebuild of my 4 1/2 year old desktop. It now has a Core i7 6700K processor with 16 GB DDR4 RAM. But the best part is the hard drive.

Amazon finally had the new Samsung EVO 960 SSD drives, which are in the M.2 format.

Holy cow. This thing flies. Read speed maxed out at 3,000 MB/sec. My last OCZ boot drive could sometimes hit 550 MB/sec on the same test. I'll have to see how fast new Doom loads up on this thing.

M.2 is basically the same 'format' as a memory DIMM but with the contacts on the short end. New boards of a slot(s) for them.

I picked up an 850 after the "why don't you SSD" thread... or something like that...

WORTH EVERY FUCKING PENNY

Are these even faster? Better? Noticeably?

Looks like its a rather decent step up speed wise. Both in read and write.

Where do this drives mount for a desktop pc?

Here's a picture (not mine).

It's barely bigger than a stick of Juicy Fruit gum and doesn't weigh much more either.

Windows boot times and program installations are faster.

I had a Samsung 850 in my work laptop and was pretty happy with it. For typical office work, I don't know how much difference one would notice. For loading and reading large files, it could make a huge difference.

How does the performance compare to an M.2 950 Pro?  I had one on my build list and just waiting to pull the trigger.

I don't have a 950 to compare side by side. Last year, Anandtech posted the following numbers for the 850 Pro (SATA socket) and the 950 Pro (nVME socket). These numbers are all for the 500/512 GB models.

850 Pro: Sequential Read 550 MB/sec
850 Pro: Sequential Write 520 MB/sec
950 Pro: Sequential Read 2500 MB/sec
950 Pro: Sequential Write 1500 MB/sec

AnandTech

Tomshardware posted these 960 numbers:

960 Pro: Sequential Read 3,500 MB/sec
960 Pro: Sequential Write 2,100 MB/sec
960 EVO: Sequential Read 3,200 MB/sec
960 EVO: Sequential Write 1,800 MB/sec

Toms Hardware

I didn't feel like spending an additional $80 to go from EVO to Pro. It was unlikely to ever be noticeable on anything I'd ever do on the computer.

Look at the picture I posted above. It has its own dedicated socket usually between the PCI-E sockets. If your motherboard doesn't have one (and you don't want to buy a new board), there are M.2 to PCI-E adapters.

Here's one (don't know a thing about this particular model)

Try the Asus Hyper M.2 X4 Mini card.  I've confirmed that it works with the Samsung 950 and 960.

For those that want an M.2 on a desktop board but don't have a slot they do make PCIe adapters of varying quality.

I wonder if U.2 is going to pick up.

I doubt it. I've only seen some enterprise drives for it. M.2 seems to be a new standard.

Tempting, but they're awfully spendy.  I could use some more storage, and if it were only $100 or so more than most 500 GB SSDs, I'd probably do it... but it's more like $250 more than the less expensive ones.  Since I just about never find myself thinking "Damn, my SSD is really slow," I really don't think I could justify it.

I'm agreed with the dichotomy. M.2 is great for desktop and laptop/small form factor. Because it eliminates cable management it's very small and frees up drive bays.

Where as U.2 let's me double the performance of arrays in the data center without adding more drives.

I put a pair of the 1TB 960 pros in RAID 0 in my new build, amazingly fast.

I was thinking about doing something like this.  How much performance do you gain by going RAID 0 over just a single drive.  I imagine the drive is pretty fast by itself.

Hmm, the price has come down a lot... the 500 GB (not the pro) is only about $120 more than the cheapest 500 now, and the 1TB is about 260 more.  I only looked on newegg; they might be cheaper elsewhere.

ETA: just checked some more prices, newegg is pretty much the highest.
