I'm looking for a cheap router.  Ideally, it will have these attributes:

1. Small

2. Two ports (LAN and WAN)

3. OpenWrt compatible

Anybody know of anything?

EdgeRouter Lite hits 1&2 of those 3,  sorry not that familiar with openwrt.

Also define small, you talking like Raspberry Pi small, or just smaller than most?

I looked at EdgeRouter Lite and also discovered EdgeRouter X, which I think I'll go with.  After looking at the built-in configuration support, I think I won't need OpenWrt after all.

EdgeRouter. If you want cheaper with a longer history in the business…Mikrotik.

There was a point in time where Mikrotik manufactured routing hardware and Ubiquiti radios. Now they both dabble in both.

Does EdgeRouter treat IPv6 like a first class citizen?

The devs are very active on their forum: https://community.ubnt.com/edgemax.  I don't do anything IPV6 yet.

Cool little PFsense box! I'm running PFsense but on a spare PC. Absolutely love it!

Once you start using RouterOS you never look back to anything wrt.  Also worth noting is they have all the same features all the way up to 64 core routers.

You can also install their software on like a Dell 2950 or something of the like to route major traffic(I have never needed anything more then their hardware).  The above are their smallest cheapest routers.  There is on called a mAP that looks like an AP but it can be a 2 port router.  Also they have just board available that you can mount in enclosures with your other equipment.

i've wanted to try a MikroTik, but no one could answer the POE compatibility with other products.

maybe i'll order one as a backup router one of these days

Mikrotik operates on a 24V PoE setup. Same one as Ubiquti. Same adapters Ubiqutiti sells will work with Mikrotik products. Most people need universal PoE compatibility at the switch level though…that's where the WISP switch comes into play. It'll support all of the PoE standards on a per port basis.

Where did you ask about the the PoE compatibility?

Anything with two ports and run pfsense on it, will kick openwrt ass.

Linux box with two ports and

sysctl -w net.ipv4.ip_forward=1

To make it permanent:

/etc/sysctl.conf:

net.ipv4.ip_forward = 1
