Yes, you should be able to build a system with a Core i5 4690k, GTX 970, and 8GB ram for $800. Maybe even 16GB of ram, but 8Gb is really all you need for games. That should run any modern game no problem.

ETA: could probably even step up to the 6600k but that might be tricky to do for $800 since the DDR4 ram costs more than DDR3 does for the 4690k. There's not a huge performance difference between the processors.

That might be tough...970's are about $300+, and the i5 4690k is about $240...

So Already we're at $540, - $80ish for a motherboard, -$50 for a 1tb HDD(forget about an SSD in this price range...can grab one later), -60ish for a PSU, -$35ish for 8 gig stick of RAM, that leaves you with $34 for a case...which can be done, but that's not going to be fun.

With a non-k processor and a cheaper H chipset board, you might be able to squeeze a 120gig SSD in with a cheap case but you'll be very limited on how many games you can download and will run out of space fairly quickly...

Here's something:  No overclocking, and you could save money on the PSU by going with something of lesser quality..but I won't mess with the cheap PSU's personally...

Is it possible to build or buy a decent gaming desktop with a budget of $800.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

A few things.

I would be reluctant to build a computer at the present time with the release of next gen Nvidia (Pascal) and AMD (arctic islands) expected this summer.  Both will be significant improvements over the current offerings over what nvidia/amd offers today.

While $800 can get you a decent computer (tower), you can get a lot more with a slight increase in budget to ~$1000.

So for something in that price range today, I would do something like this:

https://pcpartpicker.com/parts/partlist/

since you live in va, you can get the cpu from microcenter:

http://www.microcenter.com/product/451887/Core_i5-6500_32GHz_LGA_1151_Boxed_Processor

But as I stated, I would hold off till later this year before building anything.

The Division seems to have memory management issues, I've heard of people with 16GB of RAM still having the same issue. 8GB is the recommended amount of RAM according to the developer.
