Ubiquiti's site

Should I fo on the new UNIFI series when they become available, or go with the older ones?

The one I would likely use is the UAP-AC-LITE.

My biggest complaint with their APs has been that they require software to configure. Its not simply firing up a web browser and hitting up the AP IP. I also with they would just use standard POE for more of their equipment.

I would use the new ones if it was me especially if you want dual band. If you need more than 1 AP its best practice to have a PC acting as a controller. This can be done in the cloud for cheap $10/month.

The new LRs work really good.

I'd warn against the older AC ones, they had issues reported in their forums.  I'm looking forward to see what comes out of this new line up.

Foxxz - you can just SSH into it to configure if you don't want to run their software once.

I'm worried that the LR will be overkill for me.

I haven't had any range issues with my Netgear WNDR3700AV2, and i would like to think that the Ubiquiti would do better.

I've installed a single LR unit that covered an entire office building that was 150 yards long with a single ceiling mount in the centrally located data closet.  The only place that doesn't get coverage is the storage room in the back corner.

It will likely be overkill as the LR is capable of pushing more power than many small devices can return.  So your device is stuck getting signal, but can't get back to the AP.  A common thought on the UniFi forum is not to use the LR unless you have higher powered devices.

have you looked at open-mesh ?

I did look into open mesh, but it looks to be a but more than I need.

The AC-Lite should be priced close to the current standard version if the web news is to be believed.

Waiting for release commences.....

Is the UAP-AC a price drop or a new revision?

Do you mean the UAP-AC-LITE?

If so, it's new hardware.

No the UAP-AC that shows in the chart for $149. That model number has been out for a while, but has been $250-$300.

I got it yesterday, and had no joy getting it adopted.

I brought it to my router which is now a switch, because I have pfsense ahead of it.  I adopted it just fine, changed the settings, and placed it in its spot.

it readopted to the network just fine.

Until such time as I get a rack and switch setup, it will be running direct from my pfsense box.

Subscribed for follow up to this post.... I see them for $80-ish on Baltic, was holding out for the UniFi AC but software/support/price is keeping me away.  The Lite may be the way to go.

Please let us know how you like it.

Just pre-ordered from Baltic.  B&H has them too but Baltic was cheaper.  They say early Jan for delivery.  We'll see.

So far, i can't report any issues.

I finally got my WNDR3700 down where the pfsense box is.  It will be a 5 port switch until I can start building a rack.

I have great reception through the house.  The AP lite is a bit overkill for my house....  1300 sq. ft.

It resides on one side of the house on the top of the wall next to the smoke detector.  I get good signal even in the farthest point of the garage.

Edited to clarify network

So for now the setup is: ISP - pfsense - WNDR3700(DD-WRT) - everything else
