Who here can give me some info on a good supplier and reliable equipment to purchase?

Seen several youtubes on it and tracked down some equipment in New Zealand and china of course.

Who has used GSM relays for projects and can share information?

Please and thank you!

I don't know about a GSM relay, but two companies that I know of sell GSM modules that can be interfaced to a microcontroller.  The companies are http://www.sparkfun.com and http://www.adafruit.com.  They look interesting, but I can't program my way out of a wet paper bag, so I'm impressed by anything that can make a few lights flash.

I don't understand how these work.  Do you have to add them to your cell phone contract and pay a monthly fee for them? It seems like a huge expense

Yes, they'll need an active account on a phone network.  I did some quick reading, and a pre-paid SIM card can be used.

Seems like you can do a lot for ten bucks a month

I would get a GSM shield and use text messages to control the gate. I'd consider getting a T Mobile sim and put it on the free 200 megs a month plan.

lots of sketches out there for SMS parsing on an arduino. one of these and pretty much any arduino.
