Edit -

Got the new SSD.  I don't have the windows 7 install discs and would like to upgrade from window 7 32bit (currently installed) up to  Windows 7 64bit.  Can I do this without bugging one of my friends for an install CD?

Thanks

Getting a Lenovo SL500 for free.

Need to upgrade it so I can use it for school which is will have to run some mapping systems (ArcGIS).

It looks like I can upgrade the ram to 4G (according to Crucial.com)

What should I do about the hard drive?  Should I go SSD or can I go SATA?

I would like to get the best bang for my buck.

I am currently thinking

So for ~ $200.00 bucks I can quadruple the memory that it has and install 240G SSD.

Is there something I am missing?

Looks like you have a good idea of where to start.

Also, a clean install of the OS would be helpfull.

Just got my paws on the computer:

Has 3 gb of RAM

Definitely going to go with the SSD

Can you upgrade the video card in a laptop?

Generally, no.

Most laptops have "on board" video that is part of the motherboard.

To upgrade your OS, you will need two things:

A copy of the OS
A valid license (product key)

Window 7 Home Premium has a built in feature called "Upgrade Anytime" but they will charge you $89.99 and you will not get a "pure" Windows 7 Pro iso, rather, yours will be upgraded.

I would just buy a new Windows 7 Pro DVD off Amazon.  Then you will have the media and a license and can do a clean install.

ETA:  Or, you can find a junked out machine with a Windows 7 Pro license on it and download the iso from Digital River.  If you own the license, it's legal as far as a I know.

The ops computer should allready have a OEM sticker on the case. All he needs is media. The keys are good for 32bit or 64bit.
