of reading a 1.44 MB floppy disk? I have a USB dongle that'll do it (somewhere in my home). And the newer versions of Windows support it.

Yeah....I do have a USB external 3 -1/2' floppy disk drive downstairs.

Does anyone still have a 5-1/4" floppy drive?

I've got a 5.25" HD drive on a shelf somewhere.  Never tried hooking it to a USB converter, though the command and electrical spec is still identical between 5.25 and 3.5" floppy drives, so it should theoretically work.  I have and occasionally still use both built-in 3.5 floppy drives, and USB 3.5 floppy drives.

I have the usb version of the 3.5 drive, and I keep adding an older internal one when I upgrade my machines.
I have a 5.25 drive somewhere, but have not tried it in a long time. but I don't have any floppies for it.
I still have a stack of 3.5 floppies.

I think I have a machine that has a 5.25" drive in it. Win95 maybe. Haven't booted it up in a while.

I've got a 386SX with 2 5.25" drives with DOS 5.0 on it.  I should pull it out sometime, and see if it will still fire up.

NASA wants you!
There was a story a few years ago about NASA being unable to do some of it's chores because some of the legacy software and hardware were pre-486 vintage.

PC XT sitting in my old closet at the parents house.  10 Meg hard drive, 1.44 m floppy and a 1.2 m floppy.  Has not been turn on in, I guess 20 years.

Now, if I could only find my ti 99/4a with expansion box...

I have a couple of 3.5" drives sitting around and a 5.25 set up in a 486.  My Compaq Portable II has dual 5.25 floppies.  One of the 3.5" drives is an LS120 superdisk.  It connects to an IDE cable.

I used to work at a nuclear power plant, and the I&C engineering folks had to hunt down some standard 486 machines (486dx2's wouldn't work) for some old software.  That was well over 10 years ago.

Back in the days, LapLink and Fastlynx were my best friend when it came to transferring data off of old pc's.  Fastlynx could be installed via serial cable with some dos commands.

I keep a usb 3.5 around.
There's a 5.25 floppy on the shelf.
I have a USB- IDE cable and a SCSI card or two.

What I no longer have capability for are MFM, RLL, or ESDI hard drives.

I do still have a single 8" floppy disk around for novelty purposes. I may make a wall clock from it.  :)

e-peen war!  I've got an original Sinclair ZX-81 that still runs.  Imported model, not the later Timex/Sinclair 1000 sold at Target and such.

One step older - I recently inherited a Commodore PET 2001 series, with built-in cassette drive and monitor.  It doesn't run, and other than checking power supply voltages, I wouldn't know where to start troubleshooting it.

I've got a Dell Lattitude CPx with Windows 98 SE that I have both the CD drive and 3.5" floppy drive for. Use the floppy quite frequently. Also have a 3.5" USB drive…gets used quite often as well.

those old dell laptop removable 3.5 floppy drives have a mini usb port on the side. I keep a couple around and still end up using them a few times a year.
