THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT for a veterinary clinic to share records and other documents. Both are Windows XP. One is a Dell Optiplex and the other is a Dell Vostro. Similar to using one as a server I guess. I would connect with ethernet or wireless on a secure network. Thanks for any input. |

File sharing is what you're looking for. Host the documents somewhere for other machines to access them

I don't have to have them hosted on the internet right? |

What you are suggesting is what is called a peer to peer network. You do not have to have them hosted on the Internet. I would advise you to hire someone to setup your peer to peer network properly to avoid a multitude of problems. On the other hand, DropBox is free and works well, it keeps your info in the cloud. And best of all you could easily set it up, and it is backed up automatically. Another option would be to have a Linux based file server installed. I personally do not recommend peer to peer networks any more. Almost forgot, if the computers are running at least Vista (hopefully Windows 7) there is homegroups, which is a form of peer to peer networking. You can share files, printers, etc.... You could probably set it up yourself. |

And no you do not need to have the files hosted on the internet, because they will be on one computer. I would recommend creating a folder called shared on the C: Drive of the computer you know works the best/has the best storage. Share that folder so that anything you put inside of it will be accessible via the share. Make sure to to take note of the computer name and workgroup. It is important these computers be members of the same workgroup. To do this Go to Start, Right Mouse click on My Computer; from that list select Properties. You will see a tab that says computer name (note if this is like delluser-445432q3; or some ridiculous name you may want to change it to something like Office1 or Server). Beneath that you will see a workgroup name. It might be either Workgroup or MSHOME; make sure that workgroup name is the same on the other computer. Also if you have Norton installed a lot of times it blocks file shares so you will want to check your firewall settings to make sure it is accessible.
