THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT I have a need for expert advice, so I'm here to see who can help. I need to copy the system from my old Sony Vaio so I can replace the hard drive. (I am selling it, but just put in a new 500gig drive and want to hang onto it) I could put in the replacement drive and spend the next 12 hours going though reload and updates ... Or someone can tell me what I need to do to transfer the data off the soon to replaced drive to the replacement drive? The Sony notebook has vista on it, I have two different exteral hard drives, and one of those USB thingies that lets you run a 2.5 drive outside of the computer. So where is square one to begin? Thanks for all for your help! B_H |

Thanks for all for your help! B_H Do you have an external drive enclosure? That's the first step. There might be a Linux Live CD with easy to use tools designed to clone a drive. Note however, what good is the drive with your system software going to do elsewhere? Vista is probably tagged to that particular model of computer (if I recall my Sony tricks correctly). Your install of Vista will be useless (if not unwanted, get rid of that shit and get on 7.) You are gaining at most, a few hours and switching from what type of aggravation to another type of aggravation.
And, learning something that might be quick with the software and skills is still going to take you a shitload of research time, you might as well swap the drives, install Vista, then let whomever buys it finish it with patches. The disks that came from Sony might even have a clone image on them already (look at the options carefully).
A 500 gig hard drive is not that expensive anymore, consider just leaving it in and upping the price of the sale "updated hard drive!"
All it's gotta do is boot you know..... |

I was going to upgrade it to Win 7 for a family member, but Sony doesn't sell the battery for the unit anymore, and the replacements (non-Sony) need a BIOS flash to read on the system (thank you Sony for your making things difficult to use Non-Sony consumables - like the battery). The BIOS flash doesn't work with Win 7 :-(
