Nice shot.

I believe however, that the building that you are referring to is the the old WAMU tower or whatever they call it these days.

You can't see smith tower from that vantage point any more due to new construction.

Yeah, you're right. I'm an idiot some days. Some days are better.

I've wanted a DSLR for some time now and my wife gifted me a Nikon D3300 for Christmas.  My previous experience as a photographer is taking pics with my iPhone.

Anyway, here's one I took today that I really like:

try f/8 or f/9, 1/125 at ISO 100-200; also use mirror-up remote or mirror-up timer; and use a tripod if you can.  It's all about getting the sharpest aperture for your lens and doing everything you can to minimize camera shake.  Moon sharpness is a function of aperture and motionless camera, in my experience.

Shoot in RAW, play around with sharpness and levels.  You can fix/enhance a lot in post if you start with good base data.  See the last post here for a moderatly good example

thanks for the tips Fred, I am just starting out with straight camera/lens astrophotography. Until now, all my shots were through an 8" SCT with tracking and Registax, Autostakkert, PS CC etc. I wanted to get some wide field so I bought a new DSLR & decent lens. Here is some of my previous work...

Love that Jupiter/moon shot.  I'm at my limit with the 600, so unless I want to get into telescopes the rest of the universe is outside my reach.

All excellent. I think the top one would benefit from some cropping to place the eyes to follow the rule of thirds. Then it would make a great computer wallpaper or a large print to hang.

Thanks CB1,

As a camera, I love it. I can only say that if you are interested in it for the WiFi function, I am not impressed. The WiFi feature on this camera was deliberately limited to connecting through smart phones & printers only. It will not connect to a PC/laptop. They did that purposely to push you up to the 70D model at twice the price. I only found out after I bought it. To use your computer to shoot photos, you still need the USB cable. If you don't care about that, it is an awesome camera.

Older pics taken with Sony A77 with old Minolta lens.

EDIT: I just reviewed the EXIF on these and I remembered which lens it was.
These were shot with the Minolta Xi 35-200 lens f4.5-5.6 (not the 28-105)

That's a gorgeous animal.  I saw my first one in the "wild" a couple weeks ago leaving the neighborhood.  Unfortunately, I saw him on the side of the road dead a week later.  Never realized how pretty these animals are.  Took them for granted until I actually saw one.
