Body will soon be a 5d mark IV
It will be for my wife shooting the kids, families, etc - 87% outdoors and very little in an indoor studio.

Is the price of the 2.8 worth the extra few hundred?

I'd get the f2.8

Fast glass for the win.

If 2.8 is an option, 2.8 is the answer.

Would you trust a "new, other" so no box from Amazon to save $300?

I kept eyeing sigma and tamron but everyone says their 2.8s are crap

I wouldn't buy used anything from Amazon.  Look at KEH, B&H, etc.  You can trust their ratings.

KEH

Seems like a great price, too good to be true at $1119?

Just the guy I was hoping would chime in. Would you be satisfied with the gen I vs the gen II 2.8?
Shooting kids and families outside 87% of the time

Unless she is doing moving shots, the 4 will just be fine as it has the IS.

I am planning on getting the IV as well, now that the 6D MK II has come out as a dud.

24 to 70 F/4L w 70 to 300 combo.

Is your wife generating revenue from this endeavor?

I can't fathom why one would spend the $ on a MkIV otherwise.

Anyway.... I have a MkIV and a 24-70 f/2.8 version 1.

I'll take a few pics for you

She makes a few hundred a month (in a good month) shooting friends kids and stuff.

We won't go down that path of needs/wants as I have like 22 stamped Class III items in the safe.

I'd rather have better glass than a better body.

Most of the time I'd agree with you. In this case, however, I seem to recall from another post elsewhere that the body in question is a T1i. If we consider that Canon sensor tech tends to lag behind a bit, that one's a solid 10+ years out of date. Considering the advances in autofocus, metering, and general user interface type stuff, it's well and truly time for an upgrade.

Not sure I'd go that far of an upgrade though.

I took this pic with the 5DMkIV and 85 1.8   The results are similar with the 24-70 2.8II

Have you considered the 24-70 f4 and the 35l 1.4 version 1. Those two together would be about the same price as the 2.8 but give you more capability. I have the 35l and really like it. It is great for indoors or very shallow depth of field.

The 85 1.8 mentioned above is great too. And it's very affordable.

Keep in my mind the 2.8 is only one stop faster and you give up the image stabilization you get on the f4.

Good choice.

Now get the 70-200 f2.8 IS L II next.  It's amazing.
