Evening guys,

My D300 is starting to show its age, and I'm considering getting a used body to update things while having the D300 as a backup. It currently has 122,xxx frames through it so far. My D200 crapped out last year, and I've never had a chance to replace it yet.

Current glass I have is:
70-200 f2.8
17-55 f2.8
50 f1.4

Budget is going to be less than 1,200.00, and I'm looking to pick it up towards the end of the year. My main shooting is freelance photojournalism, and some landscapes/portraits. Right now a used D3 seems like it may be a nice upgrade, but if you have any recommendations I'd love to hear them. The 17-55 is probably going to stay for a while instead of getting a 24-70 due to finances.

Thanks!

I love my D300 as well but in this day and age using CF cards is a PITA along with no movie mode. I quit following bodies after the 300 though so I'm not a lot of help to you there. If you dont want to replace your DX 17-55 I would stick with a DX body though.

ETA assuming your 70-200 2.8 is a V1 VR lens its basically a DX lens as well, so even more reason to stay DX.

Thanks for pointing out the problems on the VR1. I never was aware of that when I picked it up back around 08'. While I can see it being a problem for some, the somewhat soft edges and vignetting really shouldn't effect my shooting much. Everything I'm shooting is going on a newspaper or local magazine so the print quality is low to start with.

My knowledge kind of stops at the D300and 300s area as well. That's why I'm here seeking advice. I now know more than I did before so it's been helpful!

One thought I had was keeping the 17-55 on a DX, while tossing the 70-200 on a full frame. It would be the redneck version of a 24-70/70-200 combo.

You can get into a D7200, used D500, used D750 easily with 1200. The d500 will take some hunting but I'd bet you can do it.

Any would be an upgrade over the d300 era tech.

Pretty much this.  D7200 refurbs will probably be $700 or less at year's end with the D7500 coming out soon.  D500 refurbs are down to $1400 or so on occasion, so I imagine they might dip a bit once demand drops a bit more as well.

I assume you are referring to its potential for minor vignetting on some FX bodies.
Whether or not this is an actual problem depends on the camera it is attached to, the subject being photographed, and the shooting style of photographer.

The obvious choice for the upgrade would be a D500, which stays in the pro-DX line you have been in for a long time, and makes great use of the great lenses you already have.
The use of the DX 17-55mm on a D3 is going to reduce the sensor to a resolution of 5.1 MP.
