I agree.  Much better than last night's attempt.

1/125 is way too slow unless you're on a solid tripod. There's some very evident motion blur in the image.

I also need a shutter release.  I don't like using the one on the app, so it's another item to purchase.

If your phone has an IR emitter, you can get a remote app that will let you trigger it, also an IR remote for Nikon cameras isn't expensive. $20 I think.

As a workaround until you get one, you can set the self timer mode.

No IR emitter on iphones.  And yeah, i keep forgetting to grab an IR remote off Amazon.

The self timer is one of the functions I haven't tried yet.  Tomorrow night!

useless trivia of the night: the front facing camera on the iphone (at least the 5S) does have IR for part of the ambient sensor. I am able to see it on my SO when she's using the phone before bed through my PVS-14

I need to mess around with my 300mm lens next time I can see the moon.  If you can lock the mirror up, that will reduce some vibration.  The only way I can do it with my nikon 3100 is to shoot while in live view.  I think the 5300 has an actual lockup setting, but not certain.

Next time I give the moon a go, I'll use liveview to lock up the mirror, my remote shutter release, aperture wide open, iso400, and whatever exposure time from there.  I've seen some nice pics of the moon taken with same lens I think.  Now I'll read that link already posted and see how much of that I'll edit.

Just another exposure settings data point...

Mirror-up remote (and I like to let it settle for 10-15 seconds before tripping the remote), 1/160, f/8, 600mm, ISO100.  On the tripod.

10-15 seconds seems a bit extreme. 2-3 ought to be way more than enough.

Great side lighting to bring out the craters!

IMHO, don't be afraid to shoot handheld, you don't have to wait for the sky to be dark or clear, and it is possible to get OK shots when the moon is about 25% (not as easy when better lit, but possible).  Once you get used to your camera and lens and get the techniques down, it'll come easier for you.
28% illumination, 1/100s, f/8, 400mm, iso400, handheld with stabilization ON.  Shot just as the sun dropped below the horizon and the clouds still had color, shot between breaks in the clouds.

36% illumination, 1/125s, f/5.6, 400mm, iso200, handheld, stabilization ON.

55% illumination, 1/400s, f/5.6, 300mm, iso200, handheld, shake reduction ON.

Two from tonight.  Both from the tripod, with mirror-up remote.  Turns out I had VR on for the first photo (d'oh!), I think the VR off for the second yielded a bit more sharpness.

Just before sunset.  600mm, f/8, 1/160, ISO100.

And about an hour after sunset.  600mm, f/8, 1/80, ISO100

OK, all you handheld people made me go out and try.
600mm, 1/200, F/8, ISO320.  Not too shabby.

You're using a crop body, right?  I'm at my limit for hand-holding at 400mm on a crop body, so I'd say that 600mm shot is pretty good.

Slight haze in the air and I tweaked this as best I could.

Correct.  DX sensor in the D7100.  They say that would be an effective 900mm on an FX body.

Tonight I'm back on the tripod, one about an hour before sunset, the other about an hour after sunset.

Both at 1/320, 600mm, F/8, ISO100

Try stopping that down to f/8 or f/9, you might find a smidgen more sharpness.  If you're handholding, might also try bumping ISO to 200 and exposure to 1/250 or 1/300.  Just some tricks to get eke out as much detail as you can.

ETA, for an example of what some judicious post work can do, consider:

After tweaks

Just about made the haze disappear.  Mostly with contrast, sharpening, and some level tweaking.

Anybody going to try and shoot the supermoon tonight? The last time I tried to shoot a supermoon it was also a blood moon. My camera never worked again. Coincidence? I think not. RIP Pentax IST-DL*

You're on the way!  Now is the time to start learning about post-processing.  Your first step (if you're not) is to shoot in RAW format.  There's several good FREE RAW editors (LightZone, Nikon's Capture NX-D), or you can get the Lightroom/Photoshop bundle for $10/month (I finally decided to pony up; I was hitting limits with what I could do with free 'ware).

Now, this isn't a great post job (or even a good job), but it shows you want you might be able to do working with the raw.  I took your photo, cropped it a bit, and fiddled with exposure, contract, and sharpening.  It's all kinds of noisy, but it shows opportunity.
