OK, think I'm going to get a shot of the moon every night that it's clear.  Should be a good phase series.  I'm going to process all of them with the same settings and cropped the same, so about the only thing that should change is phase.  I might tweak camera settings.

I'm homing in on this lens; I think the third one is significantly sharper than the first.

1/12:  600mm, f/9, 1/640, ISO1000.

3rd is the best.

First one looks like it was overprocessed.

Second one just doesn't grab me.

Agree with Zach.

I've never been good at the moon shots, but third one looks good.

I'll stay the course and agree the 3rd is the one I think is best. Lighting is a tad better.

No doubt the first one sucks.  Too much noise.  Second one is a little soft, think my focus was off a hair.  I used identical processing settings for all three, trying to remove variables.

Nice one!
Which lens?

Thin crescents like the first shot are tougher to start with due to the small amount of light.

This last shot looks good.  Good time to shoot, nice shadow details.

This is with the Sigma 150-600?

Tamron 150-600, @ 600 (604.1 according to the EXIF), f/9, ISO250, 1/125

I'm finding two things with this lens:
1.  For stationary subjects f/9 and mirror-up remote will yield pretty darn sharp results.
2.  A tripod is your friend.  All my handheld attempts, even with VR and 1/focal shutter speeds, have a little blur.  Might need to start lifting weights!

Tonight's moon.  Had to reduce the crop a hair.  Forgot the moon was round.

I'm still trying to get that "polarized" effect with Capture NX-D.  It's simple in Lightzone, but I like NX-D's sharpening/contrast/WB better.

Mother nature is screwing me tonight.  And probably the next few nights as well.

Guess I need to make a chart and check off the dates I have.

I've been clouded out the past few nights as well.

Best viewing time in the moon cycle and I'm getting screwed by weather. Oh well.

Not much activity on the sun either, so that's why I've been messing around with macro more lately.

January 21, 2016.  Had to go see Robert Earl Keen last night so went for a late afternoon daylight shot.  Just after 5 pm

And then, when I got home, still had clear skies.  12:30 am.

January 24, 2016.  Missed the 22nd and 23rd due to snowpocalypse.  Tonight is the full moon.

First up, moon orangeish from refracted sunlight through our atmosphere.  Well, actually some Virginia pine boughs backlit by said moon.
DSC_8836-VP Moon Backlit by FredMan, on Flickr

Next, a little higher in the tree, and a little higher over the horizon.  Moon has assumed it's grayish color.
DSC_8840-VP Moon Backlit by FredMan, on Flickr

Finally, no trees in the way.  Moon is now about 15-20 degrees above the horizon.  I'm going to get another shot when it's approaching the zenith.

You're getting the hang of this thing. Looking good.

I've got a lot of haze in the sky here and it's a bit too full for a decent image. Hopefully the next few days will be clear.

January 25, 2016.  Almost bailed on tonight; there's a thin veil of high clouds giving everything a little glow. Some mods to my post work, though, and it came out pretty good.

ETA, here's one as-shot, except for the identical crop.  Raw and post is where it's at; you can take something mediocre and turn it into somethin not too bad.

Moon won't be up for another hour or so here as best as I can figure.

Might be clear enough for a picture though.

Well, it was clouded over last night but I got it this morning.  Dating this one 1/28 even though it's really 1/29.

January 29-30, Day 20 of the lunar cycle

<gonna wait for a better one later>  HERE we go.  Protip- when shooting the moon wait until it's high in the sky.  Shooting low-elevation moons means you're shooting through more atmosphere.

DSC_9543-Moon160129 by FredMan, on Flickr

Here's the not-so-good version I shot about an hour after moonrise.  Compare it to the one with the moon near the zenith (above).  Exact same post work.

That's with the 400, right?  Sharp as a tack, though you're getting a lot of haloing/ghosting or something with all the whiteness outside the moon.  What was your cloud cover like?  Maybe high thin clouds?

ETA, looking at the exif, I'd drop your shutter to 1/100 or faster.  Not sure what aperture is sharpest with your lens, but look into that.  Shooting the moon is essentially daylight photography, long shutters are not needed.

My general settings are ISO125, 1/160, F/8.  I shoot mirror-up remote, off a tripod, though with those shutter speeds you can shoot handheld in a pinch.

Thanks I'll give that a shot next time. Snowing right now...

I think the halo is just from overexposing.
