I've been trying to get more wildlife shots in, and the 70-200 mm I am currently using just isn't cutting it. I need more reach.

Was considering picking up the new Sigma 150-600 mm S that has come out recently, but than was browsing on the B&H website and saw this..

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1175034-REG/nikon_af_s_nikkor_200_500mm_f_5_6e.html/BI/4775/KBID/5289/

Looks like a new lens from Nikon..

So, go with Sigma, or wait?

or get a teleconverter?

That lens is actually rather interesting.

Assuming it doesn't just lose all sharpness wide open (and performs well at say, f/8) it looks like a hell of a long lens on a budget.

I kinda want one.

I've got a 70-200 and a 2x tele. The reach is OK, but it's still not nearly enough to get close to some things. Image quality takes a hit from the tele also.

Actual wildlife photography is an expensive game

ring mounts, carbon tripods, long prime lenses

hours in a blind

Gee, look at this bluebird photography, with an SX-60

is low stress and some of the long lens non pro cameras do great facebook photography

According to published MTF charts, the new 200-500 should be a great addition. At 400mm, it will be sharper than your 70-200mm f/2.8 on a $500 2x converter and still be at the same speed.

200mm:

So a local shop had a NIB Sigma 150-600 S in stock, and let me rent it for a week with the option to buy it at the end of that week.

Just got back from a quick walk round the park with it..

WOW..this lens is a beast. I work out fairly regularly and am fairly decent shape but by the end of my 2 hour walk I was starting to feel the weight of this lens.

I managed to get some fairly nice shots of bugs and birds, all handheld so while good they are probably not as sharp as they could be. Since the idea of this lens for me is for wildlife shooting where I am moving from spot to spot I hate to bring  my tripod on these excursions but I may need to consider doing that if i go for a larger lens, or at least a monopod.

You will definitely want a tripod/monopod. I find that even the 70-200 with or without a tele gets to wearing on you after a few hours.

If you don't want to carry around a tripod or monopod, perhaps you can use an alternative.

This is mine:

I've been thinking about getting a few of those installed. Tripod threads are all the rage in modern body modifications I'm told.

On the Photography forum I frequent the Sigma is considered the best bang for the buck telephoto out there.  I don't know anything about the new Nikon but it's hard to imagine that it would be a better value for the dollar because it's a Nikon lens.  fredmiranda.com is a great resource for photographers.  Lots of top amateur and pro photographers there.  Lens reviews, wildlife forum, landscape forum, gear talk, and many other forums of interest to photographers there.

yeah so i ended up keeping the sigma 150-600.

frankly I am pretty impressed with some of the images I've gotten out of it even handheld..I probably need to get the USB drive for it and make some adjustments to it for focusing, but it's a pretty impressive lens.

The image quality is not as good as my Nikon f2.8's, but it's pretty damn good.

I still want a dedicated long lens of some kind but the 70-200 plus a 2x did fairly well for me yesterday. Ideal solution? Perhaps not, but it got the job done in a manner that I'm happy with.

I posted the pics over in GD. Take a peek, lemme know what you think.

those are awesome, I saw those yesterday..my photos are ok, but not nearly that good.  that swamp looks awesome by the way.  I may just have to book a swamp tour as a vacation at some point.

Yeah, I thought about just getting a teleconverter and calling it a day, probably should have to be honest and saved some money, but i really wanted the reach the 600 mm end gives me..

dedicated long lens...$$$$.$$..looked into that and laughed..even with my spending habits thats just something that won't happen.

The Tamron 150-600 is a very nice lens as well.  I've had some very good wildlife shots using it.

Sample shots with the Sigma 150-600..

all handheld.  all are cropped to some extent, the osprey is probably a 100% crop from the center..

I am impressed with this lens..I do need to get the USB adaptor for it though, as it the focus is off...

Nice shots, I especially like the one of the murder bird.

What's this USB stuff? My camera has a built in focus tweaker, does that not work with non-nikon lenses or is it not enough to get that one sorted out?

yeah, my camera has that also, but everyone is telling me I need a special Sigma  USB hub to actually program the lens..I need to do some more research and find out whats what.

Looks like it may allow for firmware updates to the lens but other than that i don't see the diff between doing adjustments using the in camera tweeker..
