Did the Dot-Tune on all my lenses yesterday, I *think* I see some slight improvement on the Tamzooka.  Subject distance here was about 710 feet.

Both at 600mm, f/9, ISO 250; the pair was 1/100 sec, the single at 1/200 sec.  Tripod and remote mirror-up.

Stay safe, Zack.

Kinda been in a funk here and have hardly touched my new lenses since they arrived.  Ended up with a 14-24mm f/2.8 and 85mm f/1.8G which is razor sharp.  I'm trying to work my way back out of it, so I took photos of neat clouds with the wide angle, and decided to see just how sharp and shallow the depth of field on the 85mm is.  Btw, holy crap that lens is sharp.  Other than Adobe Raw tweaks, the only post was adding a watermark and editing out two specks of dust on the wide angle.  Still some minor stuff on the sensor I need to take care of before the 5th though.  (I'll be on base taking aircraft photos)

You may remember Tripod, the 3-legged doe we've had her eon the farm since 2010.  She's been hiding the past few months; caught one glimpse of her last week but nothing before that since mid-April.

Well, it appears she's been busy teaching her offspring how to survive in a harsh world.  Tonight she posed with one her daughters from last year, and one of her grandchildren.

Tripod, keep it up!  You're the toughest deer in the Commonwealth!

This was probably one of the best pictures I took while on vacation in Melbourne Fl. this past week. My son wanted to get up early and take a few sunrise pictures with his iPhone. I didn't feel like dragging my rig out to the beach again, so just went with my Samsung Galaxy 7. We were heading back to the hotel when I stopped and looked down the walkway and had to take this shot. For me, this means the Pathway to Peace.

You know the main thing I'm finding out about higher ISOs?  Any kind of significant cropping is like throwing the frame in the noise factory.  High ISO and no cropping is very manageable.  Crop it tight and it's like shooting through a screen door.

@FredMan

What are you doing in post to cut down on noise?
I shoot a lot in very low/bad light and would love to be able to stretch out the ISO, but above 2500 it just goes to golfballs.
It is usually action shots as well so no tripod.
no ss under 1/125 and I try to use 1/160, and wish I could use 1/250.
f/3.2  is as low as I want to go so I don't tank the DOF.

Any ideas welcome.

While I'm not Fred, I personally use Nik Effects DFine for noise reduction.  That said, Adobe RAW also has noise reduction settings that work pretty awesome as well.  Both are solid to use.

Well, the first thing is to use a D500 .  It's another level above the D7100 when it comes to lower noise at high ISOs.

Shoot raw.

Expose to the right!  @zack3g is the ETTR ambassador and it works.  You don't want to blow it out, but bringing exposure down in post for some reason helps inhibit noise.  Bringing exposure up if underexposed will always introduce noise,.

I'm doing some sharpening, and then using the masking slider to smooth it out a bit; not too much or it takes away detail.

I then fiddle with the luminance and color noise reduction sliders and try to strike a balance between noise reduction and detail loss.

I also fiddle a bit with dehaze, that's an amazing tool.  Again, not too much.  I often find I have to bump exposure a bit after dehazing.

Here's the same image cropped, but nothing else.  You might notice it's not particularly noisy to begin with, that a function of the D500 sensor and a little bit of overexposure.
EXIF for this image was  600mm, 1/640 sec, ISO 8000, f/9.  Dot tuning the Tamron has definitely improved sharpness; that lens isn;t known for being razor sharp but for my purposes it's sharp enough.  I'm in love with the 600mm too.

Funny thing is I went out to try to create a bracketed HDR tonight and they honestly aren't worth posting.  They look the same as the images below or a touch worse, when these are just tweaked regular shots.

And since I know you guys will want to see them, here are the two HDR shots.  I'm guessing that I'm doing it wrong, as I know I should have been able to bring the shadows up without them looking crappy.  First is a 5 shot and the second is a 3 I think.

Merged into HDR in Adobe RAW since the HDR Pro plugin isn't working for some weird reason.

If you have the Color Efex Nik Plug-In for Lightroom, try using the Detail Extractor, Tonal Contrast and Pro Contrast settings. Never messed with HDR, have no need to when Color Efex gives me all the adjustments I need.

My P-40 Warhawk photo above, was edited with a mixture of those three (Detail Extractor, Tonal Contrast and Pro Contrast) then exported back into Lightroom for some dodging and burning, and clarity adjustments around certain features of the aircraft to bring out details.
