I've been there before, beautiful place.  Awesome pictures!  I'll actually be down there again early August (hopefully).

I'm local to the area (move to Knox in December) and love it.  I come to Cade's early on weekend mornings when I need a refresher.

Not this guy.  He was flat out running like Beelzebub with a .270 was after his ass.

Today's lesson is pre-commercial thinning.  Client property; clearcut 10 years ago and planted without any site preparation.  LOTS of natural loblolly and Virginia pine seeded in.  Stand is WAY overstocked and will take twice as long to produce half as much wood.

Brought in a crew to manually fell stems to bring it down to about 500 trees per acre.  Very labor intensive.  Took a crew of 12 guys 6 days to do 111 acres.

Now, my client bought the property like this, so it was the hand he was dealt.  The cost to properly prep and plant is about $200/acre.  Just planting costs about $75/acre.  Cost to this PCT was about $130/acre.  And while the stand will grow from here on out as if it was planted properly, it's probably 5 years behind a properly prepped stand in terms of time to first harvest.  Would you rather have $1000/acre in 20 years or 25 years?

Thanks for the kind words, but I really need more glass for birds. I am just not getting what I think I should be.

But I am also not able to spend 7K for a 300mm  2.8

Went out to shoot a sunrise this morning, this was taken right before a line of severe storms passed through.  Colors were wacky, sadly it all turned grey 10 minutes after.

Thanks.  Just wish like hell I'd had my D7100 and Tokina out at the brewery Saturday evening;  the potato-cam pics are OK but I could have gotten so much more with real gear.

Cooper's Hawk?

Don't think so, looks more like an osprey to me.  I'm no bird expert though.
He passed over me, heading away from me then circled back and came directly back at me and never took his eyes off me.  Zoomed right overhead...I probably got 40+ decent shots of him on his approach and flyover.  Still working on tracking / panning with birds in flight, I'm missing fewer and fewer shots every time I head out it seems.
