So, I decided to give the new Tamron 150-600 telezoom a shot.  I sold my Canon 100-400 (original version, not the new one) and picked up the Tamron.  Took it to the local nature preserve this afternoon and took a few shots with it.
Here are the results.  All shots from a tripod.

Nice.  I've been eyeballing a Sigma 150-500 for when I finally get a camera.  I'll have to see what Tamron goes for.

Very nice, impressive shots. Were you using teleconverters before?

Before?  Not sure I understand.  You mean with the 100-400?  No, I couldn't autofocus with that lens using a TC and the IQ probably would have sucked anyway.

A full frame 5D body I assume?

Well, it's obviously slower than a 600 f4 prime would be and also slower focusing.  It's also got a lot of plastic in it, so don't be dropping it on the ground much.  It's hard to hand-hold in anything but bright sunlight due to its focal length.  It's much better on a tripod.  It's very sharp though, when you do your part.  For the money, it's a freaking steal.   Getting to 600 would cost you a minimum of almost $4000 in a Canon and that's buying a used 300 2.8 and a used 2X teleconverter.  Pretty much the same for Nikon.

Do you have a good monopod to try it on?

I just picked up a refurb 300mm f4 is and a 1.4x III converter for my 7dmii today.  Can't wait.

I do have a good monopod and I intend to try it but I haven't had the opportunity yet.

Yeah.  Been a bit slow there this winter so far, actually.

Got this shot yesterday hand-held at 600mm about 1/1250s.

Very cool. This is a very intriguing lens. The price is amazing for the focal length. I might have to break down.

I'm saving up for this lens.  I have a  Nikon 300mm F4 ED right now, which doesn't have much reach on a full frame sensor.

I'm half way there, hopefully I'll have enough saved up in a couple weeks to order one.

Can't wait to see how it works with my D600!

Some great shots by the way.

I see pixelations.

JK, nice work, love the bird tossing a fish in to his mouth.
