http://stlouis.craigslist.org/pho/4374078083.html<- is this a terrible deal?
http://stlouis.craigslist.org/pho/4416407708.html <- this better?

should I use B&H instead?

I have a degree in art (Ceramics) but did go heavily into photography, but I can't see a way to swing a full frame model at this time..

The first one as a damaged lens, which leaves me wondering about the camera.
The second one seems reasonable.

B&H will get you some type of limited warranty.

I would get a used/refurbished camera from adorama or B&H instead of rolling the dice with a private seller.

#1 is a bad deal as I doubt the seller is being honest.
#2 has a better zoom lens but asking is dealer used retail prices.

Always ask for the shutter count.

OP get a Sams Club or Costco membership and get a brand new Canon or Nikon kit there. No worries about gray market or dropped cameras that way. You have options in the $600 range.

I will check out that route.

I have this weird hangup that I want something... in this case a camera, and I will gather information to the point that I am ready to buy it, I'll be holding it.. then put it back and just leave.

The first friday in May, I am plunking down $ for an anniversary ring, I think I'll pick up the camera then too.

I think this is a decent starter kit. You may quickly outgrow the kit lens(es), but if you're just getting into DSLR photography, this is a good kit to learn the iron triangle without breaking the bank much.
