THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT
I need a 3.5mm input microphone for my GoPro as I want to improve the audio on the recordings.

I am interested in finding one that will pick up audio in an omnidirectional pattern all around the camera and not a directional microphone..

As an example if someone is wearing one of those clip on microphones their voice audio is great but anyone around them does not come in clearly. Which type or specification do I need to look for if I want it picking up and recording anything in its general surroundings?

I also presume my needs will require a self powered microphone but am just guessing there.

Potential uses....on vehicle either external on the undercarriage or internal. Shooting sports so it would need to reproduce loud sharp noises well.
Plays well with self, and cleverly disguised as a responsible adult.

The Go Pro does not have Phantom power, so you will need a mic that is self powered.

Most on-camera microphones, like the Rode mentioned above are cardiod, ie they pic up the majority of the sound to the from, less to the sides, and a little to the rear.

The problem with the GoPro is that it is so small that you can't really mount a mic on it easliy.

I'd reccomend something like this in an omni:
