Is it just me, or is this way more hassle than it needs to be?
I set this machine up for my kid last year, with no intention of playing online games. We are rural, so internet connection is subpar and inconsistent. We only play stuff like CoD, Batman, Wolfenstein, etc. No MMORPG stuff.
Every game we buy requires 12-24hrs to download "updates" before we can play and they all require a Live account to sign in before playing.
I just bought him the 360 version of Black Ops, because we missed playing it, but it won't let us sign in a second player for split screen.
The password restrictions are tougher than PayPal or any online banking site. I just don't get it.
Am I doing something wrong, or is this just modern gaming?

I think I've found the root of your problem.
I'm out in the sticks too, but my internet at least is consistent. I set my XB1 to instant-on and it automatically downloads whatever patches and updates are available as they come out, most times anyways. Also, the games I play, I follow the various developers and publishers on Twitter to get a heads up as far as when a patch is coming, so I can make sure the POS gets it (which honestly, I shouldn't have to do, but that's another thread in itself). ETA - As far as downloading updates and such for new games, if it makes you feel any better, the PS4 does the same thing. It's both a good and a bad thing, good that developers are trying to fix and update their games, bad for the end user because I just wanna play, not wait hours for a patch to download and install.
As far as backwards compatibility, as much as it sucks, some games just don't work like they did on 360. Backwards compatibility is a nice bonus, but it doesn't work 100% either.
Never really noticed any password requirement issues.
And, IMO, as an XB1 owner and player since launch, the user interface just ain't the friendliest or easiest thing in the world to navigate.
