If I bought a kickass SSD, would I need to reinstall MS Window and all of my programs?  Or is it possible to just copy the disk image and then "boot up" as normal as if nothing changed?

Disk ghosting or cloning software is what you seek.  Usually comes with a new HD.

I did a fresh install to start over clean, but Samsung EVO drives come with Samsung Magician software that can clone your old drive.  Really easy if you pick up a USB to SATA cable for about 10 bucks.  You will also need a 2.5 to 3.5 chassis adapter if you are installing in a PC case with only 3.5" disk slots.

I have never been able to get disk cloning software to work. The IT guy at work was saying he tried this one recently and it worked perfectly.

I rebuilt my Windows 7 system from scratch, have a MSDN subscription and activation key, etc.  Got rid of a lot of bloatware.

Had to go to Sony's site and get specific drivers for the laptop.

The Windows updates took forever

I'd just do a clean install personally, but samsung disk magician is a decent utility and that should work fine as well if you don't want to mess with it.

I just did this and if I remember correctly I had a bit of trouble changing the drive letter on the new drive since the machine already had a drive "c" and trying to change that letter would warn me of possible issues. I ended up getting it to work just fine, but then refreshed my computer anyways.

I swapped C drives last week. Unplugged all the drives, used the new hdd with a install usb. That got me Win installed on the new C drive. Then I plugged my mass storage drive and old C drive in and transferred the files I wanted. Worked fine.
