currently have dual 6850 in crossfire.

want to upgrade and looking at the gtx 970 or 960

Running an AMD 1100t black edition
16gb rip jaw
sabertooth 990fx

would love a better card in the 150-200 but willing to spend 300 if I need to.

The better of the 2 cards you listed is of course the 970.  The 960 is about 100~150 cheaper.  You could even get a 960 as low as $190 on Amazon, http://www.amazon.com/Zotac-GeForce-Express-DisplayPort-ZT-90301-10M/dp/B00SIOOLS2%3FSubscriptionId%3DAKIAI62SSPLIHX7AR6PA%26tag%3Dgpuboss-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB00SIOOLS2

However, the difference between the 2 cards is significant.  2GB vs 4GB, Higher clock speed on the 970,  1,127 MHz  vs 1,050 MHz, and if it matters they have crysis3 benchmarks with 970 at 50.6 fps vs 36.1 fps.

For the money, I'd go with a 970.  If you cant afford to break over the $300 mark, go with the 960.  For $325, a 970 is a pretty good card.  Better than spending 500+ lol.  Then again, its all about the make too, if you don't care about who makes the card you can get it for $325, if you're picky, can go a bit higher.

For instance:  PNY GTX 970: $325  EVGA GTX 970 Super Clocked $329 Asus GTX 970 Turbo: $355

Will run just fine.  Unless you're streching a game across all three.  I have a 27 inc and a 24 inch on constantly while playing.  On occasion my cintiq 12 inch as well.

That's on a 760.  You'll be fine.

The 960 is a budget card.  970 out performs it.  Nothing wrong with a 960 if that's all you can afford though.

Not what you asked, but the R9 280x is a good alternative. Amazon has them in the  $190-230 range.

I have 2 780 Ti Superclocked GPUs in SLI across 3 17" monitors (they were free ). Triple monitors cuts my FPS by about half on Arma 3 when playing King of The Hill.
I'm getting about 30 frames on KOTH. It's on the low end of frame rates, but very much playable and I still rape bodies like it's cool. I might turn off Suround when/if I get a 28" G-Sync monitor. Honestly, after playing Arma with 3 screens, playing with just 1 makes it feel like I'm running around looking through a scope .

Some other game modes on Arma 3 I can get 75-80 frames with 3 monitors. Just pretty much depends on the server and game mode your playing, your CPU power, and GPU power.

On BF4, CS:GO, TF2, and GTA V, I can get about 180-230 frames, but my monitor can only keep up with about 75 fps fluidly.

Resolution is far more important than physical size, but I have to ask where you got 3 24 foot monitors. That's got to be a bad ass immersive environment. Your house must be huuuuuuuge.

Ah  I dont buy any used parts.  Only used parts I ever use is if its between myself and my brother.  Had too many bad pieces when I bought used in the past.

Not a bad deal though.  I have a 4770k, it's badass.  I'm sure the newer chips are even more badass

Curious, why go with a k variant instead of a vanilla? Are you planning on OCing or have some other reason to use a unlocked CPU? Just asking because I've seen people buy up the K flavors and then never utilize the fact that it's an unlocked cpu so they basically waste the extra cash.

Not much of a price difference, why not get unlocked "just in case"  ??

Not to mention the unlocked is faster out of the box than the base

Save your money and buy an i5 OP. There's no advantage to the i7 for gaming.

While the i5 is great for gaming, the i7 will/can net you more fps with the extra threads.

And also, with microcenters price, why the hell not. $270 for an i7-4970k? Why not?

How many games out there are using more than 4 threads at a time?  I don't know of any.

Unless something has changed (I haven't been following it closely, so maybe something has with the new gen), the only benefit I've heard of is the higher clock speed and cache, which gives a pretty minor boost.  Clock speed of course is mostly meaningless if you overclock.  You might be able to drive an i7 another tenth or two of a ghz higher, if you get a good bin.

Unless we are talking about the 6+ core i7s.

I think those all use the 2011 socket, too.  So you'd need a different mobo.

ddr4 is the future.  But it's still expensive now.
