I've never liked them,

They thrive on offering a few dollars for a trade in then resell it for $40 (assuming it's $45 new).

There's literally nothing there used that's ever a steal, I mean never.  All of their used games are set at a marked rate, which means at any time you can go on ebay and find the exact game, at a buy it now price less than what they offer.

There's 2 other used games stores here in Houston that I genuinely like (although 90% of my used games are bought on Ebay or occasionally amazon).  What I like about them is that used game prices aren't always set.  The store I visit the most (there's 3 on my side of town) is GamesPlus.  When they have too many copies of say Dragon Age on PS3, they'll mark one or 2 down to a very low price, like a quarter or more of the value it is new.  I just bought all 3 Resistance games at $2 each used, I think that's a steal, they had them marked down because they had so many copies in stock.  They'll also consider discounting if you talk to them right, like "hey I'm buying this used N64, can you give me 2 free games of my choice?" Etc.  That's a business model that encourages customers, I still can't understand why I see people inside gamestop.

I can say this though, in early 2000s, they were still selling SNES carts in giant bins.  I picked up Super Metroid, Mario World, Zelda link to the past, and a few other popular games for maybe $5-$10 each.  Go on ebay now and see how much Super Metroid goes for.

Wondering how Gamestop is going to survive once all physical game discs stop being made, since a lot of their business is based on new releases, where as the 2 used games stores I visit rarely deal in new games.

Normally, they suck.  Every once in a blue moon though, they have some pretty decent deals.

Seedy as Hell.  Dirtbags coming and going from there make the check cashing/payday loan place look like an up-scale antique store.

It's all about location.  The one I go to has a great clientele.

Nothing to do with stolen video games practically being a form of currency?

I have not set foot in a Gamestop in nearly a decade.

Is over half the store still full of action figures and other bullshit, with only a tiny single rack faaaaaaar in the back for PC games?

There was one in the PX on Fort Campbell that I went into a few times during the years I lived there. They never had anything to offer me. They sell nothing but console stuff now. They used to have PC games.

Mediocre.

I hope with Best Buy's aggressiveness they are pinched even more.

First they bought up eb games which was better.  Then they refused to improve their service or practices.  Don't even get me started on their pre-order BS.

There is really no reason to patronize gamestop anymore.  I can only imagine what they will do when we move to a DD dominant (if not exclusive) game distribution model with the next gen or consoles.

I don't know.  The store I frequent is in a fairly affluent town.

I used to be against digital games because the where not any cheaper and I could always sell the physical game later or trade it.  My opinion is now in reverse because of Steam and Gamestop.  For what little they offer for it vs them selling it, I might as well as buy it during a 50-80% sale and just keep the game in my library.

Plus I kept losing 360 games due to cracks at the center of the disk.  No need to worry about either that or scratched disk (or insurance) if you just buy it digital.  Most games these days also require some kind of install or commit to HD space so there is not much benefit to save HD space by having physical copy.

I like to BS about games with the employees.  Their pre-owned game policy is nice also.  I can try a game and within 7 days, if I don't like it I can return it for full refund.  I just did that with Dragon Age.

They don't really have a rack for PC games anymore.  There is one now for phone cards though.

Best Buy is doing the whole trade in for credit / sell used games schtick.

A long time ago (pre 2000) a LOT of places were trying to get in on that. I remember Toys R Us doing it and then stopping.

Walmart is also in the used game market now too.

I traded in an a refurb 360 during one of their double value promotions with accessories and left with almost $250 in store credit.

They were selling for $150 on CL/ebay

That being said most of the time it's a fucking scam. I'd rather buy new games on Amazon and have them shipped prime.

They are obsolete.  They are the next Radio Shack.

ETA:  Blockbuster may be a better analogy.

Anyone remember Babbages?

Babbages was the SHIT. A proper seller of PC games in their heyday, back when the PC games came in honest to god boxes with beautiful graphic design. From across the store you could tell a Sierra game from everyone else just on the shape of the box alone.

I tried to get a job at the local mall location back in like 1991 but they didn't hire me. I don't blame them I didn't have any retail experience yet. I had to live out my "sellin' games" fantasy in a Target in the mid to late 90s. I still have 'Nam like flashbacks of black Friday 1996 when the N64 was hot.

And I too scored metric tons of SNES carts new in box when my Target put them all on closeout clearance. Tons of good games for like five bucks each PLUS my employee discount. Too bad I wound up trading them all to a guy for a rifle.
