Thought I'd post this up as a thank you for the Arfcommers who've helped me make this happen.
Props to: Redarts hondaciv Roebuck DocBach Okay dokey, here's the parts list: PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant CPU: Intel Core i5-4460 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor ($186.99 @ NCIX US) Motherboard: MSI H81M-E34 Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($55.72 @ Mwave) Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($79.98 @ OutletPC) Storage: Crucial MX100 256GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($109.99 @ NCIX US) Storage: Western Digital BLACK SERIES 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($74.98 @ OutletPC) Video Card: MSI Radeon R9 280 3GB TWIN FROZR Video Card ($195.91 @ Newegg) Power Supply: Corsair CX 500W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply ($54.99 @ Amazon) Total: $758.56 Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available Generated by PCPartPicker 2014-10-18 14:42 EDT-0400 It had more rebates when I bought it. Here's what all that looks like: First things first, pull the old IDE and newly purchased SATA DVD drive from the old rig: Next, RTFM: Get the mobo: Put the chip and heatsink on: How about some RAM? How about the biggest, most ridiculous graphics card I've ever seen: Freakin' dwarfs the mobo: Well shit, I guess I better hook up the powersupply: Wait, it's a 4 pin connector and a 8 pin plug. WTH? Luckily for me, the above Arfcommers helped me unfuck the situation. The plug splits in two and you use just one half. Next, again with the help of the above, I get the GPU straightened out. Plug the on/off switch in from the case and give it a whirl. Victory! Man, I'm digging the new BIOS screen. So easy to use. Looks like it sees the memory, the SSD, the 1TB, and the DVD drive: The only hiccup is that it's not seeing my old IDE drive with the SATA adapter. I might fuck around with it more, but I might just buy the IDE to USB kit from Amazon, rape all the data onto a USB and transfer it like that. Windows 8.1 is coming in the mail, and I'm going to stick the guts into this fucking monstrosity: I'll update the thread as it all comes together. |

I think you'll be very happy with it. Glad you found a good price on those parts.

Just got the Windows 8.1 disk in the mail today. Should I install the OS before I put everything in the case? Any suggestions on how to partition the drives? SSD is 256mb HDD is 1tb Thanks! |
|
Don't have any other HDD plugged in when you install windows. Just have the SSD plugged to the motherboard, but it can all be in the case when you install it. Keep the SSD for the OS and for any games that you play frequently, and the 1TB open for any media files or less used programs.
also your work area seems to be a great place to conduct static electricity with that fuzzy mat. I'd be paranoid as fuck even with an anti-static wrist band! |

I dont see a need to partition either.... Unless you want a partition for more game install space on the 1TB

But let me touch on why you don't have the HDD plugged in - windows will install a 100mb partition of system files to the HDD if you have one plugged in, even if you tell it to install to the SSD, that will kill your install if you replace the HDD or your HDD goes bad. |

Good to know. I'll definitely unplug it. So, zero partitions for the SSD and the HDD. Just so we're straight. I'll go start the install process once I hear back from you. I assume I want to install the 64bit version over the 32 bit version? |

In bious choose ahci instraf of raid. Make the ssd C. And thr 1TB D.

I assume I want to install the 64bit version over the 32 bit version? View Quote Yes, unplug the HDD, and installed windows 64-bit without any partitions onto your SSD. 64 bit is preferred for your situation because it allows for more access to ram, which will increase your response time when accessing programs you have installed. With 32 bit, you are limited to using 4gb's only. There's also other benefits, such as the 64 bit compatible software runs more efficiently. It used to be that 64 bit versions of software had compatibility issues and were less reliable, but that is no longer the case. |

Is that a fractal case voodoo?
As for fan placement, I'd probably have it on the side facing the front of the case to try to pull cool air on to the CPU, rather than push or pull warm air from the GPU over it. |

View Quote NZXT Phantom. I don't have a front fan, only two fans on the side. They're pushing cold air in, where gets pushed through the coils by the processor fan. CPU runs 28 - 40c on idle (depending on room temp). |

Create an identically-sized partition on the HDD to clone a backup image of your SSD as your regularly-scheduled backup. Remainder is one partition as bulk file storage. |

Windows 8.1 is up and running. Not digging the UI, but I knew that going in. Only issue I've found is that it doesn't like to restart. Meh, I'll figure it out. Loads hella fast with the SSD fo' sho'. Gonna hook up the HDD and put everything in the case. |

also look at classic shell once you get the os installed. after everything is up and running i would upgrade that processor fan to a nice 120mm tower one just because those intel ones suck. one day you could step up to the big league with us water coolers and over clocking. apart from needing a better cooler and a getting a nicer motherboard that is one solid setup you have there. heres my baby more or less how it sits now http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv344/bobfig/Updated%20computer/IMG_20111231_021858.jpg View Quote Yeah, the Intel fan is rubbing right now. Don't know if that's because it's horizontal right now, not vertical. I'll let you know when I put it in the case, but I'm not impressed. Not a huge fan of OC'ing, I'm a sissy that way. |

parts list seems kinda oddball, could have went with some other options for better performance/price and or expansion/upgrading later (mobo's ram restrictions/no sli/crossfire)
but if it works for what you want, thats all that matters ~building gaming pc's since 1999 |

I'm sure it'll be more than enough for Max Payne 2, Portal, FEAR, and Homeworld 2. |

I think it looks pretty good, you should be able to play anything out. Probably not max out but definitely with playable frames and decent settings. Now let us know when your ready for Arma3.

Don't download classic shell. It's an unnecessary cancer.
Me when building my rig: Motherboard: ASUS Maximus VI Extreme CPU: Intel i7-4470k *delidded* RAM: 16Gb (4x4) Corsair Platinum 2400mhz Graphics: EVGA GTX 780 Ti Superclocked (2x) in SLI PSU: Corsair AX1200 SSD: Samsung 840 Pro 256Gb for 8.1 OS HDD: 1Tb Seagate Baracuda (wanted a 1 Tb SSD, but spent that money on GPUs) I should have gotten the 2Tb HDD....it was only $20 more What I started on, but never finished: Complete with 3 free 17" dell monitors. One of these days I'll upgrade. I don't think I could ever go back to playing games with one monitor. |

Windows key + X will bring up a little menu with several things people look for, such as to turn off/restart your computer, programs and features, device manager, command prompt, task manager, control panel, run, etc etc. Windows key will bring up Windows 8 start menu. It will have a page that looks like apps. Hit the down arrow at the bottom and it will show every program installed. There is also a search button in the top right. 8.1 is far superior than the older "classic" versions. Very easy to navigate though and find things.

I had a hard time getting out of that screen, but finally made it to the desktop. Now I want to upload them to Imgur, but I can't find where they are. Usually I could find them by going to My Pictures in the Start Menu. I don't know man, everything seems to be all about the sizzle and not the steak. I just want to do stuff, not fart around with all these "aps" and "tiles" and whatever the fuck. |
