Early morning run/walk with the group I run with. I conned one of them into doing a half this morning. Summer time humidity has hit Mississippi. We started at 5am. It was 74 degrees with 96% (not a typo) humidity. It's ridiculous.

Signed up for a half-marathon in September.  Running just for the heck of it is pretty uneventful, so I need something to train for. lol :)

I'll be working toward a new PR for that race.

Good luck on the PR. I know having some sort of goal helps. There is a segment on Strava for a run I do a lot. I made it my goal that on my solo runs I would try to beat it. I came close a few times, and even tied it. Today I blew it away by over 30 seconds. Next goal is to take the top spot on a different segment. It's the little things.

Thanks!  Its something to shoot for anyway after you've ran several halves and full before. lol :)

Nice on MP -30!  I normally run at 08:30/mile, so for this half I'm shooting for 08:00/mile.  I have plenty of time to work on it, bar any injuries.

I rarely do any speed work, mainly just maintained pace over a set distance. I need to try to pick it up some. My last half was at a 9:48 average. I wouldn't mind getting that closer to 9 even.

I mainly run on the treadmill, so what I do is run at my normal pace for the duration I'm going for and then for the last mile before cooling down I'll bump the speed up by .2 mph (or more, depending how I'm feeling and how far I've run in the current run) each 400 meters.   I always monitor my heart rate (I use a HR strap for the treadmill and my garmin watch for two readings) and breathing so I know how fast I can push myself each time.  After awhile, you'll get used to running faster and then you'll end up starting your run at a faster pace.  Now for distances, you get into the Lactate metabolism, cross training, etc...  I only did that when training for the full marathon.  I followed the training schedule from the book Run Less Run Faster (ISBN 978-1-60961-802-5) and it helped me run faster than my goal.  But, I customized it where I was running more than it wanted you to as I felt I wasn't running enough.

Edit it to say:  Heck yes it's boring as hell running 20 miles on a treadmill. lol :)

I can only imagine. I will eventually have to do longer treadmill runs closer to doing a full. For now 5 to 6 miles is bad enough.

1 mile warm-up, 3 miles at lactate threshold (~174 bpm heart rate / ~6:25/ mile pace), 1 mile easy, 2 miles at lactate threshold, 2 mile cool-down.

I just discovered that if I split up the miles at LT I can get more miles at that effort than if I did all of them at once! I don't think there's any way I could have ran 5 miles at that pace continually. Next week I may try for two 3-mile tempo segments.

Wow what a difference a little heat makes. Today I did a warm up and cool down with a fast 10K between .Averaged around 170 bpm for the 10k, and should of PRd. Nope. Gonna have to start running early morning.

Heat definitely takes it out of you. It typically takes 2-3 weeks of running in it to acclimate to the point that you aren't running that much slower than usual, but even so you'll never be as fast as you are in cold weather.

Honestly, I felt better than after any of my marathons. My calfs felt like they were a little tied, but nothing bad. Quads/hamstrings were perfectly normal. Glutes hurt after mile 20 or so, but not as bad as during/after my first marathon. Oddly enough my left shoulder was sore, kind of above the shoulder blade.

The intensity of it was quite a bit different than any other races. More of a "just keep moving" thing than anything else. No form of calories was at all appetizing by mile 28.

Almost up to a 100 mile/month average for the year. I should get there by the 31st.

Awesome job. I can't imagine running 6hr straight. Of course a few years ago I couldn't imagine 3 miles, the next year 6, last year 10, this year 13, etc. It's crazy how over time the miles just get easier regardless of whether or not you train specifically for a certain time or distance. For me consistency has led to increased time and distance accidentally.

Getting HOT here in SC.  Probably not going to get as many miles in for the next few months.

Should have logged about 50 more miles this month, but ended up with a total of 10 unplanned days off due to vacation

Thought I was going to run and just never felt up to it after running around all day and I couldn't convince myself to set an alarm to do it in the AM either.  Back on schedule now though--have some catching up to do to get back on pace for 1K miles.
