In another thread we were trying to get roland to post before and after pics, so I figured we would start a thread for that.
So....lets hear or see your progress! I will start, I won't do before and after pics but ill but ill take the wussy way and do written text. I am 41 years old, I found SS and the compound lifts about 2.5 years ago or so. I made really good initial progress, then once I tapped that out I basically wasted over a year not really knowing how to make progress at an early intermediate stage. I got some help from a pro (Andy Baker) and have since been making slower but good progress again. I am 6'3" BW went from 215 to about 213-217 or so today. Belly around the naval went from 44 inches to 36-37 inches. Arms went from 12.25 inches to about 16 inches, without really ever doing curls or isolation tricep work. Legs at the thigh went from about 22 inches to 26.5 or so. Chest went from 43 to 44 inches. Main lifts right now: Squat I did 1x7x315 the other day. I have done a single at 350. Deads I have done a singe at 365, but have done a complete reset since going to a starting strength seminar and finding out I was doing them with my lumbar spine in flexion the whole darn time. Bench I can do 225 pounds 4 times. OHP I have done a double at 160. As you can see, I am a pee wee leaguer compared to many, but I feel great and have no back pain, something I suffered with for 15 years. Come to find out my back was just WEAK. I am shooting for 225 pounds at 15% BF by the time I am 45 years old. Don't know why, but thats what I wanna do. Right now I am about 215ish at 22% BF as per a bodpod test. Dont be afraid, lets hear or see your progress! |

I'll save you the time waiting for his pics.

Hey guys what's going on in...oh...
Ok fine wait till I get home.... |
|
I started when i was 18 and 135lbs. I could bench 110x5. Im now 2 months from 25, 160lbs and could bench 240x5 no spotter last year before my shoulder started giving me lots of problems. Im now down to working out maybe once every two weeks with my schedule and injury. Im still 160lbs but now with more body fat. I can still put up 185lbs x6 without much problem but i get some bad pain in anything over.
I go for reps with 100lbs for squats. Had a meniscus tear so high weight just isnt worth it to me anymore. |
|
6ft and broke 250lbs this week and up 14lbs in 4 weeks. Size 34 pants, large shirt.
Body fat unknown but it's a little higher than normal. On a bulking phase right now. |
|
I need to take some progess pics but I have pics from 2009 when I was 275 lbs. I am 25 lbs lighter right now....
My highest weight was 284 lbs which I reached around February or March of 2009. I was unemployed and was coming off an oilfield job that wasn't good for my health. At that point in my life I had never lifted weights of any significance. I used to be a decent runner but I let it slip. I'm sure you don't need to hear the reasons why. [removed fatty pics, see page 3 for comparison] This is before any weight training, before any crazy hiking/climbing that I did later. |

295.5 Jan 1, 2014
218.5 a few weeks ago. Still have a ways to go on the weight but my goal was to get back in shape. I actually want to get in better shape than I ever was. Don't know if that's entirely possible. but I'm not stopping at least till death anyways. |

Thanks guys.
BTW I think it's worth mentioning that I lost that fat and built the muscle without ever "bulking". It was a slow build/burn- proof you can burn fat and build muscle at the same time though it's difficult and slow. Average diet: Breakfast (sometime a really late breakfast): 5-6 eggs sometimes bacon (half pound at least) and zucchini. Sometimes in a tortilla. Lunch: usually very light. Sardines, apple cheese, peanutbutter or any combo of the above. Dinner: meat (pork, beef or chicken- if chicken, it's usually thighs with skin on) and veggies. Salad, some kind of greens and/or sweet potato or quinoa. Total cals usually comes to 3k or so give or take |

When I started this, it was strictly diet and cardio, but I was pretty over weight and needed to get a lot off. Then I started incorporating weights into it but didn't have a good plan. That's when I turned here and got hooked up on the S.S. program. Love it, although I still need some coaching on some things ( I should be further along I think then I am ) I have seen a change in my body's appearance. Still have a ways to go but I can see light at the end of the tunnel now at least. |

Buds traps are implants!
Bud....curious how much muscle do you think you added from 40-45 if indeed that was one of your goals? I know it depends on each person but I'm just wondering how much muscle is realistic for me to put on in the next 3 to 4 years. |

I know it depends on each person but I'm just wondering how much muscle is realistic for me to put on in the next 3 to 4 years. View Quote My weight fluctuated a bit over the years, sometimes intentionally and sometimes due to accident or injury. About 2 years after that first picture I had a second round of knee surgeries (I had 7 surgeries total to my right knee by age 28), and I dropped down to about 185 at my lowest weight. I knew how to eat to avoid getting fat, but I lost a lot of muscle. After extensive rehab I was able to get back to the 210-215 range. I would then play around with different diets and workouts through the 90s and early 2000s, and would intentionally weigh between 190 and 220. My wife does not like the extensive vascularity that I get when I'm under 200, so I now keep my weight between 225 in the summer and 240-245 in the winter. I find that it is easier to build and keep muscle when my body fat is higher, in the 16-18% range. I am also a hell of a lot stronger at the heavier weight. I was still able to gain muscle that way fairly easily throughout my 40s. I find that it a bit tougher post-50, bit still doable. Compound lifts with correct form and decades of knowing what "feels right" helps me. I also have the diet thing pretty much figured out. My peak weight last winter was 240, and I started my cut on March 1. I am now down to 228, and will ready for a beach vacation that my wife and I have planned in May. The short answer to your question is that there is no reason why you can't add as much muscle as your genetics and body habitus will allow when you are in your 40s and 50s. |

Hey bud, you look stacked dude. How old are you?
My dad inspired me to start lifting weights because I saw how much it improved his health. He stopped lifting weights and I kept going. I usually take 3-6 months off per year but I am thinking now I should try for 1 year consecutive. My dad is 62, I wish I could convince him to start lifting again. |

I'm turning 40 in a few months.
I was very strong early in life and worked in construction and farming. Tossing steers and plywood will put some muscle on! Then I got blown up in a large propane explosion getting burned on 20% of my body at age 25. Turns out that's pretty tough on the body. 6 years ago I started getting nerve damage from and auto-immune disorder. Last year I read something here in the SD/F forum about SS, so I bought the book then got the flu shortly after, ending up with me in a wheelchair after the infection went wild. Started lifting on the program in December. So- Since December I've gained 13lbs or so. Big belly now, but everything else is slimmed a lot and although I haven't been tested, I know the BF% is still dropping. Squats from 150 to 250, 3x5 (no idea what any of my maxes are, I just do the program to some degree) Deads from 150 to 320, 1x5 OHP from 75 to 110, 3x5 Bench from 120 to 170, 3x5 In the midst of this I took some time to recover from some slight nerve-related setbacks and trained for and ran a sprint duathalon, 5K run, 20K bike and 5K run in just about 2 hours. I don't know my measurements, but I can tell you that my pants don't fit anymore. I have no clue why Carhart thinks we don't need legs, |
|
40yoa 5' 09" Always been fat. Was 260 in 9th grade. 230 when I graduated high school. Did lots of 12oz curls and cheese curls after that. Got down to about 215 about 14 years ago, slacked off, and gained it all back plus a bunch when I got lazy again.
Started MyFitnessPal July 2014 at 311lbs. Weigh-in last week was 220. Goal is to get to 199 then see where it goes. Haven't been under 200 since probably 7th grade. Need to start implementing more weights (I've got 'em, just need to put 'em to good use). Up to now, I've done very little exercise except for some walking/jogging and occasional pushups, dips, & dumbbells, but I'm losing muscle and need to curb that. Starting to up my jogging thanks to a new dog that's a ball of energy. Also need to work on actually eating better food rather than just a bunch of lower-calorie processed food. |

That's great progress, Bulldawg. Keep it up, man.
BTW, I believe that we met at one of the TBRS gatherings in 2000 or thereabouts. I used to live near Dallas. |

View Quote Honestly, it's easy for me to stay lean because I'm an ectomorph and I have a natural inclination to eat lean foods. For example, I don't do any ab shit or regular cardio but still have visible abs (not saying I have amazing abs, but I think they are decent considering I literally put no effort into them). I've noticed as I age that my waist is less lean than it used to be so I may start doing ab stuff and light cardio. I'm actively trying to gain weight but struggle to do so. I never eat junk food and the only thing I drink is water. Not sure if this is relevant, but I'll throw it out there: I have been a strict vegetarian (not vegan, I still ate eggs and cheese) for the past 15 years or so. One of the "Golden Age" bodybuilders, Bill Pearl, was also a vegetarian and he was totally jacked. Only in the past week have I started eating fish to try and up my gains. That's a pretty significant life change for me considering I have been a vegetarian for +15 years |

|
I'm 6 foot tall and slightly over 40.
It took me roughly 12-13 months to drop to 180. One thing I've noticed is my belt is way to big now, as you can see in the photo. My lifts varied. OHP I lost a significant amount. I can't remember exactly off the top of my head what I did pre cut without looking at my log that I don't have with me currently. I think I hit 170. It was down to about 135. It is my weakest lift though, which is odd since bench is my strongest. Bench went from 305 to the 285 range, maybe slightly lower, I didn't really test it. It is back up to 305 currently though. Squat and dead stayed roughly the same. My theory is I did lose strength, but I lost body weight as well. So they offset each other. |
