Finally got a bench and barbell at the fire station. No squat rack yet though. I think we can do front squats off of the bench. What other exercises can we do until we can afford a rack? Goblet squats? I want to try to replicate the back squat as closely as possible.

Might I inquire as to which brand/model bench and barbell you got?  I'm in the market for one and trying to find one that wouldl work for me.

I'd look into building a jerk block type, cost is time and the materiel, which shouldn't be all that bad

This is how I squat up to 315 in my garage. I just drop it down, though.

Holy shit, $20/mo for a gym membership seems like such a better safer idea than this.

It's not that bad.

But yeah, jerk boxes are probably the best idea.

Buy a trap bar. Safer and replicates a squat without many of the lower back concerns.

Here is a nice big one.

Squat rack

They auction off pretty inexpensive.

They are auctioning off a bunch off hammer strength equipment too in GA.

Ironmind has a compact squat rack; it can be set up to do other stuff, too:

That Steinborn squat is a new one on me, never heard of that before.  Looked pretty amazing but you won't catch me trying it!

You're not going to be able to squat the kind of weight needed for strength gains without a rack.

I'd focus on heavy deadlifts and lighter weight squats for assistance work. (front squat from cleaning the weight up, maybe some dumbbell squats. Whatever works for you)

Also, you guys can't tell me that steinborning doesn't have a much higher chance of injury, particularly if someone isn't already well experienced with regular squats. There's so much that could go wrong. What percent of a real max squat is an experienced lifter even able to steinborn?

How can you front squat out of your current rack but not back squat? Is your bench attached?

Another alternative movement would be sumo deadlifts. Gives you a lot more hip/leg engagement than your typical DL.

Yea the bench is attached. It is difficult for me to even front squat off of it. We are working on the jerk boxes. We also found a grant for fitness equipment that we are going to apply for.
