Had surgery on my upper back this afternoon. Four weeks before I can get back into the gym. Hit PRs on squat and pull ups this week so I least I'm going out on a high note. Going to be hard not working out for a month. I can start walking after 10-days. Just keep telling myself once I heal I'll be stronger than ever.

eta Demerol isn't going to help my spelling any.

Was the surgery due to injury during a workout?

Just remember that once you are cleared hit the lower body and any unaffected limbs the best you can.   Also, this is the time to tinker with and modify your diet (go strict as possible).  If you have to use the leg curl, leg extension, adducter, abductor, and arm machines for a while  to avoid unnecessary strain on the back do so.   Machines were originally made for rehab.  Use them for this purpose.

Just make sure your surgeon clears you first before starting, and that you are working with a competent physical therapist (PT) that takes a total-body approach.  PT's that work with athletes are your best bet.  Your surgeon should know an athlete PT to send you to.

10-day update:

Morning of the surgery after 16-hour fast. Had to come out. was growing bigger, pressing on spine making left arm go numb. Screwing with muscle function of right shoulder and upper back.

2-days after and three pounds lighter. Bandages off.

Incision site is not painfull. What hurts is the tendons and nerves in the back of my shoulders from the back muscles trying to move back into the correct position after being displaced by the tumor. Lab results are not back yet but I'm positive its benign. Cleared to walk on treadmill this week which is awesome because my hips and knees were starting hurt from the inactivity.  Allowed to start lifting with only the 45# bar next week.

I just keep telling myself in one year I will be stronger than ever.

Wow crazy. How did you end up finding it?

I could totally see that going unnoticed.

it was about the size of a chicken breast. the part that you can see is between the skin and the spine. other parts were actually under the muscles.  Was watching TV, reached back to scratch my back and "what the hell is this thing!"

Three week update:

Still losing weight. Finding it hard to eat enough as I'm just not hungry with the sedentary lifestyle Ive had to lead. Completely off the hydrocodone. Just a couple of tylenol if needed now.

I'm able to do some light range of motion shoulder exercises with 8# dumbells. Using the leg machines at the gym now. I benched, squated and OHP 45# 5x5 this week.  As bad as it sucks I just keep telling myself if i add 5 pounds a week thats 305# in a year.

You should try some protein shakes with milk, oats, honey and peanut butter.  They taste great and will keep the weight on you.

5-Week update.

Did dips and pull ups this week for the first time since the surgery. Just a few sets of 5 to test range of motion but everything felt good during and after.

Pretty excited about working back into pull ups. Gonna try 5 sets of 5 today.

Edit: Did 6x6.

Glad to see you recovered well.  If no muscles were touched, I'm sure you'll regain your strength quickly.

Progress is slowing. Had to deload on OHP and Bench when I stalled at 125 and 210. Dropped 20% of the weight and working back up. Deads and Squat are still improving.

Squat: 190 x 5 (x3)
OHP: 110x5 (x5)

Sat:
Bench: 185 X 5/5/5/5/10
Dips: 3x20

Monday:
P/U: 15/12/10/10
Deads: 235x5 (x3)

Tomorrow is bench day, will do 195x5/5/5/5/5+

Hit some road blocks. Busy work schedule has meant I had to double up on some days or work out back to back days. Strained my left pec (better now) and left shoulder (getting better).

Anyway the last week of work:

Thursday:
Pull Ups 12/12/12/12
Squats 205x5/5/5
OHP 135x5/5/5

Friday:
Bench 220x 5/5/5/3/2
Cleans 120x 5/5/5/5/5
Dips 20/20/20

Sunday:
Deads 245x5/5/5

and something new (for time)
Pull ups 10/10/10/10/5/5/5/5/5/5 = 70
Push ups 20/20/20/20 = 80
Airsquats 30/30/30/30 =120

I'm at 169.4# now, feeling a little chubby so added in the extra body weight stuff on Mondays to get the heart pumping. Squats are still my weakest lift. upper body pressing movements are still my strongest lifts.
