I have been doing starting strength since the spring or so. over the past two months I feel like I have hit a plateau on squat and OHP and that my bench has started to decline. Tonight I tried doing Stronglifts 5x5 just to mix it up and try something new.

My final exercise was barbell rows. I started with just the bar and worked my way up to 95lb or so. After this set I stood up and got super light headed and starry vision. I had to grab the wall and go to a knee. I never felt like I could get my breathing right and may have been going to heavy to start with.


Any advice on how to improve my form/breathing or is there another exercise I can replace barbell rows with and still get the same effect?

So thats what this fever and abdominal pain is...wow wish I hadn't sneezed on all those patients medications when I was working in the pharmacy last week. This is how it starts.

heart rate/blood pressure issue?  not eating the right stuff before a workout?

This used to happen to me often when i was a fatty and I started working out in circuit training classes..I'd literally start seeing stars and would have to grab onto something to keep from falling over.

Still happens, but not as often since I learned to pace myslef and eat better before a workout.

I didnt eat the greatest yesterday. Hopefully it was just an unusual event.

Try breathing next time. Have to make a conscious effort sometimes. How long was your workout before the rows?

Try deadlifting near your max if you really want to feel like you are going to pass out.

Has this ever happened before?

I used to get a little light headed if I got up too fast from bending over.  Maybe not enough blood flow to the brain.

I'd do like other posters said and check you breathing, make sure you exhale on every rep.  Also, check you form: back flat, head up- not hanging down.

Well I was back at it again tonight. Did fine on squats and bench. When I got to Bent over rows I did two sets and started getting dizzy. Switched it up to seated cable rows.

It sounds like you are finally starting to push yourself a bit.  

Wait until you get your first bloody nose when you deadlift with some decent weight.

Doesn't stronglift have people doing pendlay rows? Try a standard bent-over row (assuming you are doing pendlay's) and see if it has the same effect on you.

Never heard of that. Probably explains why I get dizzy lifting sometimes but don't when doing cardio. My resting heart rate is already low like upper 40s to low 50s and they said it drops it even further.

This, also referred to as "flexing out."

You basically clench to tight and stimulate the vagus nerve which slows your heart rate, bottoming out your BP, and when you stand up you go orthostatic and get dizzy.

Before just standing up, go into a squat and flex your quads. This will boost blood pressure and allow you to normalize. Then just stand up slowly.

The better shape I'm in the more this is a problem for me also.  It was described to me as the body being in shape enough that small stimulations don't eliciy a boost in blood pressure, unlike out of shape people who need to ramp up to get out of the chair.  The result is occasional light-headed feeling when you stand up or sometimes even during a workout.

It seems to make sense.  I know it only really starts hitting me when I'm in shape and resting heart rate is in the 40's.

This happens to me every once and a while if I forget to take a big breath prior to a heavy lift.  I take it as my body telling me I'm not breathing.  Are you using a belt?  That may help with remembering to take a deep breath prior to each lift.

Yeah same here...I just expect it now and pretty much immediately take a knee for every rep that's about 90% + of my 1RM....crazy. Heavy deadlifts don't even do that to me so consistently.

Just a thought...do you have long legs and shortish arms? When you bend over to do the rows is your head close to even with your waist? It may simply be an issue of bending over too far and all the blood rushing to your head. The barbell should not be hitting the ground unless you're extremely short. Try standing a little straighter or doing dumbell rows supporting with a bench and see how that goes.
