No, but my fitness tracking program wouldn't have 6 months of wrong numbers in it. Some people like to see where they came from and the progress they made and when. Now I don't have an accurate log of that.

It also matters when you go lift somewhere else and put weight on the bar and don't understand why you are having problems lifting it.

Once again the only thing that matter is how much stronger you got. Your log still acurately shows how much weight increase or the last 6 months.

Also if you go lift some where else unless they use competition bars and compition plates the weight one the bar will be different then at your house.

When i worked at LA Fitness one late night when we were bored we weighed a bunch of weights and DBs none of them were what they are marked. So every time someone came in unless they used exactly the same weigts on the same bar it was off.

People worry too much about little shit that doesnt really matter unless you compete.

It may not matter to you but it matters to me. That's why I buy competition plates and a good bar.

This is the damn truth. The so called "quality" weights in some gyms are so off its ridiculous.

Guess my OCD is not that far yet. But I do load the plates in the same order so it is consistant every time.

But i do agree that a good bar is definately worth it.

Never thought about weighing the bar or weights, I'm to trusting I guess, but I have a good scale so I think I'll weigh bar and weights just
out of curiosity.

I did manage to pick up the hex dumbbells last night.
It included a rack for them.

I'm going to have to do a little arraigning in my shop soon.
I guess next on my list to spend my money on will be a decent bench that inclines and declines ( at non-back breaking angle )
then the cage.

Until I can get some instruction I will practice on the squats with lite weights and I think I could maybe try a few of the power cleans using the bar only without killing myself.

If you get cheap wieghts and bar the weights will not he very consistant. It does not bother me since I am just conserned about getting stronger. So if I use the same bar and weigts even if they are off i can still measure how much stronger I got.

You will also find different brands of cheaper weigts are not all the same  diameter either.
With modern technology You would think they could make them all exactly the same weight and diameter.

Not yet, unloaded the dumbbells and rack I bought yesterday and saw the bar.

I'll weigh the weights and post.

Here are the plate weights.
Gotta say I was shocked at the differences.
All the plates were pairs except the 5lbs, they came in 4's.

45lb.  47.5 and 43.5
35lb.  34 and 36
25lb.  24.5 and 25
10lb.  9.5 and 10.5
5lb,    5.5,5.5, 4.5,4.5
2.5lb   2.5 and 2.5

with the bar weighing 39.5 lbs

I guess when lifting I can put the heavier plates on my weak side.

Have a question on back work.
I've never really done any weights for working my back.
I know that me be the problem to began with.
I was already doing barbell and dumbbell rows on the workouts
I was doing.
Friday I sorta started the 3x5 plan by just going through the sets best I could
using enough weight to stress me. No spotter available.

I did the barbell rows that was recommended in the PDF linked above this forum.
( just bar squats until I can get help with form )
My back gets pretty sore to the point of hurting during and afterwards.

Question is, is this normal for starting out on back work? I wasn't doing a lot of weight.

I'm going to the Dr's office to get my shoulder checked out and was wondering if I
need to ask him to look at my back to.

With backs, you can hurt yourself pretty easy with bad form: ie rounding your lower back or not keeping thoracic extension. However, barring any leg tingling or lightening bolt shooting pains, soreness and stiffness are to be expected. Especially For someone just coming back to lifting.

I have two discs that ruptured and a litany list of other issues from a nasty injury. So I can specifically feel the difference between workout discomfort versus injury type pain. The good news is that I avoided surgery because of lifting and the hours I spend in the gym hammering at my core.

I would imagine those barbell rows hit muscles from angles they've never felt before. Soreness eases up in a couple days, nerve involvement doesn't. That's always a pretty good guide. You're on the right track to getting strong now.  Good luck and remember: a wide back gets the ladies in the sack.

I made my brother do squats with just the bar because he was having problems sitting back into the squat. He was so sore the next day he could barely walk. So yes extreme soreness is usual. If it is pain and not just soreness you might want to get checked out.

Well Dr's appointment scheduled for tomorrow just to be on sage side.
I don't want to lose the momentum I have.
Dropped quite a few lbs since January already.

I've did my first official workout using the 3x5 that was suggested.
My wife wanted to start it also so I had company.

I lifted heavier then I have been, actually heaviest since my resolution, but not so much to
over stress my shoulder.

We did the squats, well sort of.
I wanted us to just do the dumbbell assisted on the flat bench until I can get coached on
the proper form.
Thought about using just the bar but decided against it. I didn't want to start off with a bad form
that we would have to correct later.

Then we did the bench 3x5 and dead lift 3x5.
Think I messed up on the number of sets on the dead lift, I looked at this thread afterwards and saw
1x5 on the dead lifts.

Questions on this.

Is it just 3 sets of exercises starting or 4?
Been so much on this its actually confused me a bit.
There seems to be a different spin on it from every thing I seen.

I did enjoy the workout though and got more pumped about it the more I read.
Definitely got a good sweat and burn.

It's 3 sets of 5 on bench, press and squats. On deadlift it's 1 set of 5. On clean it's 5 sets of 3.

You also do a lot of warm up sets before your main sets progressively working to your work set weight.

Luckily we were using lite weight for practice, legs feel worked but not sore.

My thighs have been super tight the last couple of weeks already, can't seem to stretch them out enough though.

Have a couple of questions.

This program OK for women? My wife wants to do it.

Out of curiosity, why only one set of dead lifts when the others are 3?

Can someone explain the difference between the 3x5 and 5x3x1?
Is the 5x3x1 where you do one more set at max weight for a minimum of 5 reps but keep goig till exhaustion ?

Also on these exercises, we do group " A " one week and group " B " the next?

Day A
Squats 3 sets 5 reps
Bench 3 sets 5 reps
Deadlift 1 set 5 reps

Day B
Squats 3 sets 5 reps
Shoulder press 3 sets 5 reps
Power cleans 5 sets 3 reps

I'm really liking the structure this program offers, where before I was kind of all over.

I was doing Arm work one day, chest another and then back and shoulder.
I'm also doing the 100 pushup and 200 situp program.
In between all these I was doing some calisthenics and walking.

Sounds organized as I type this but it wasn't.

The warm ups, I've done a lot reading but I a little confused on this.
Are you supposed to do a certain percentage of your max on each warm up set and if so how many warm up sets?

And here's another,

How long do I do these until I add other exercises to sets?

I want to stick to this program and give it a serious effort because most here speak highly of it, and I been trying to look elsewhere on the net for info. ( might not of done this, lot's of conflicting or confusing things out there )

Anyway, I said I had lots of what may seem like dumb questions, feel a little embarrassed being out this so long, and not knowing this.

I do appreciate all the advice.
It's been a help to me.

I got my first cortisone shot today for my shoulder.

Doc said Xrays for it and back looked very good, probably have a pinched nerve in back and said shoulder was very tight compared to the other one.
Shot went to left shoulder.

Book has been ordered.
I scanned over the link when I first found it and re read more in depth yesterday while waiting to get xrays and the docs visit afterwards.

I did find a link for a S.S. warm up calculator

http://corw.in/warmup/

I'm on cell so can't make it hot.

Does this look useful?

Meet with a personal trainer tomorrow to talk about what I'm needing help with.
Hopefully it works out so I can get started with the entire program.

I've decided to go ahead with the titan rack.
Talked to a couple of arfcomer who have them and are pleased with the product.

I'll post some pics after it gets here if anyone is interested.

Good job getting the book.

I don't know about the app. Never used it.  After awhile you just learn a round about way to add the weights to warm up.
Link Posted: 8/1/2014 10:31:05 AM EDT
[#22]
For the warmup, I do 2-3 sets of 5 with an empty bar, and then do 2reps at 15lb increments.  I work through it pretty quickly since it's not tiring.  That gives me 3-5 warmup sets prior to the work sets I'm lifting (230lb squat).

I skip the empty bar for the deadlift and start the warmup with a pair of 45lb plates.

I've been doing rows instead of powercleans.  Switching over to a real gym at the end of the month; get into power cleans over there.

Here's the link to the calculator.
It's actually on the net, don't know if there is an app for the cell.
It's supposed to be based off the Starting Strength program.

Warm Up Calculator

I talked with the personal trainer today.
Real nice guy.
He had a solid build, not cut but you could tell he had strength.
Said he played college football.

His gym set up is small, had one power rack, looked like one bench station, several tread mills and bikes.
At least one smith machine. and some other stations.
His set up was pretty much for one on one or one and what he said maybe up to five.
Said if he tried more then 5 clients at once he wouldn't be as attentive to each as he should be.

I was the first to ask about just getting technical instruction, most want a program.
Said he could do it though.

He runs a boot camp as well but not interested in that.
I am doing most of the exercises I did when I was in now.

He suggested that I run several full successions with him.
That way I would be doing complete workouts and could get lined out on the correct form. That sounded like a good idea to me.
Two sessions a week.

His prices were more then what I expected though.

$260 for 5 sessions one on one.
$300 for couples

His overall prices for one on one are:

30 sessions @ $1190
20 sessions @ $800
10 sessions @ $450
5   sessions  @ $260

Couples:
10 sessions @ $600
5   sessions @ $300

Anyone have an opinion on or suggestion on the prices and the 5 sessions ?

I know it would take me more then one or two sessions to get the form down for a few of the exercises.
More money then I was wanting to spend on it also.

I still have the rack to get and I know I'll need more weights, I've already sent out a few emails from looking on Craig's List, no return emails as of yet on that though.

IMO ~$50 an hour or so if the dude knows what he's talking about isn't bad.

ETA- my wife charges something like $75-$80 an hour for one on one Pilates...

$50/$60 an hour is about minimum
that seems pretty fair
sign up for just a couple (I guess the 5 sessions)
use 4 of them to get instruction, then go home and work out on your own and use the 5th in a month or so to make sure you haven't drifted from proper form

Ok,
Had a bit of a set back.

These picks are what $470 looks like.

One of my free loading dogs picked a fight and lost.
I was able to pull a few out but when he opened his mouth, he had quills in is tongue, gums, checks, roof of his mouth and down towards his throat.

At the Vet.

" />

At the house trying to get them out.

I'm having to hold off on the trainer for month.
I'll just try working on the squats myself best I can.

The rack should be here today though, excited about that.
I do have a question on benches.

Would this bench work ?
Bench

Has a like a 1500 lb rating, so I figure my 236.5 body weight leaves me a lot of room to lift over 1200 lbs, I think I can .

Monday I officially started 3x5's, with the exception of squats. I did several with the bar only just trying to work on form and Technic.

But I did lift heavier on everything else, bench and deadlift.
I'm loving those dead lifts.
I'm kicking myself for having waited so long again to get back into this.

Here's another question.

I have been reading the PDF linked /  Guide to Novice Barbell Training - courtesy of kethnaab
My Starting Strength isn't do to arrive until Thursday.

But the PDF and other sites on this subject says it's OK to substitute Pendlay Rows or Barbell Rows in place of Power Cleans.

Would it be OK to alternate between the Barbell Rows and the Pendlay Rows.
Like Monday do the Pendlay and Friday do the Barbell. Or one week do the set and the next full week do the other?

I need help on this, I could tell I sucked in every shape form and fashion.

I never done much back work till the last month or so and even though there is a slight soreness I'm loving this back work.

Oh, last title change.
Link Posted: 8/6/2014 11:31:51 AM EDT

Do pendlay rows. They Fucking suck... but build huge strength.

That bench is fine. It's pretty solid and what I was going to get before other things fell into my lap...  check Amazon...it was really cheap there.

This is one of three.
He was a rescue my wife found in the middle of the county road we live on. Figure he abandoned.
We live on 14 acres and have sheep that luckily he has left alone, but he has taken out several cats that have wondered up, countless armadillos and skunks, at least one fox and a small / med size deer.

Did our second workout tonight.
Damn!! we need help on squats, very frustrating.

The presses and Pendlay rows were great though.

The rack is setting in the shop, didn't have time to put ot together tonight, but will tomorrow, I hope.
Wife is having a root canal in the morning so I hope I can have it together and use it for Fridays workout.

Another question, what do people put as padding if anything under the rack?

Thanks, I'll look this weekend.

Well the rack came in yesterday, and got it put together today.

This thing is awesome.
Solid, heavy gauge steel and heavy ass thick safety bars.
Mine come with dip bar attachments so I'll get to work on them along with the pullups.

This is the one I purchased.

Titan Rack

It looks well made to me. Heavy, solid.
It's 12 gauge steel. The safety bars are are solid and heavy.
The J-hooks are sturdy, I hung and bounced on the pullup bar and it didn't try to tip, no counter weights added when i did this.
The Dip attachments are rock solid also.

I need to get off my butt and go out and take some pics.
I'll get em posted ASAP.

I looked at that one but it looks like it needs to be bolted down without keeping a lot of weight on it.
I thinks it's smaller then the one I got.
Cost more to.

Awesome! They have an ad on Craigslist for this one for $350, looks like they are sold out. I go to a bad ass gym now, but I am really thinking about buying that rack, a power bar, and some plates for the house.

Edit:

He just thinks they are cheaply made.  Which they probably are.

The guy at Black Widow doesn't like them, though.

Doesn't cost as much as the other ones I checked on and seems pretty solid to me.
Time will tell I guess.

Well did my first complete week week of starting strength.

Well, sort of.

Damn squats are going to be my nemesis.

My son took a couple of cell phone vid's when I was just trying squats with a standard barbell to work on form.
I'm having a hard time going down far enough.
Seems like it's partly my thighs and maybe calves.

I tried stretching good before hand but still having a hard time.
Form going up didn't look good at all either.

I wonder if doing body weight squats for a while will help loosen my legs up more?
Anyone got  a suggestion?

I also increased my Dead lift weight up quite a bit to 165 lbs.
I can definitely feel it today, I may have increased to much to fast.
I didn't hurt it, I can still life more but my back isn't used to the workout yet.

If anyone has a thought on the Body Weight squats until I can get coached properly on them I would like some opinions on it, or if I should just keep working on it with the barbell.
I just don't want to pick up a bad habit and then try to work myself out of it later with coaching.

When I said cheaply made. I meant compared to racks like they sell at elite
