For better or worse, I converted my 21" hardrock to 27.5".  Plenty of clearance in the back on a Maxxis Ignitor 2.1, and swapped fork lowers from a Recon silver to my XC32 stanchion.  Except for the steerer, the stanchions were the same length.

We had a nice day today, so I went out for a test ride.  It felt pretty good with 20F/25R pressures, and a bit smoother than the 26" wheels.  I somehow managed to go over the bars very slowly in a rock garden, and come away unscathed.

Built myself a new bike. My old Trek was too small, and this was too good to pass up!!

2014 Pivot Mach 429 Alloy, Full M8000 XT 11 speed group, XT brakes, and DT Swiss wheels. Came in right at 29 pounds, with a heavy ass seat, and seat post. Gonna ride it tomorrow, and get the fit, and suspension dialed in. Can't wait!!

Been Zwifting like crazy since it's been so cold.

Today the temperatures were better (high 60s) but it was crazy humid and threatening rain all morning so I did another zwift session.

In the good news department, FTP is up to 184 from 169 a couple weeks ago. Really looking forward to training for a couple winter months so I can hit it hard first quarter next year. I am wanting to get in as many social and organized rides as possible next year.

Am missing the road, however, since I haven't been on it 3 weeks.

Zwifted last week quite a bit when the temps started to get down near freezing ...They are giving a way a Specialized Roubaix ..apparently all you have to do is ride a 31mi course to enter the drawing ..Temps are headed toward zero so I'm cranking the speakers to 11 and ride inside.

Been sick all week but was able to get a ride in out on the road.

Only got in 26miles and had to stop many many times to rest & refuel. Amazing how much being sick takes out of you. My resting and riding heartrate were much higher than normal.

That said, after 3+ weeks on the turbo I can feel some improvements. 26miles and average speed ticked up to 16.9mph. More importantly, the estimated power from strava is ticking upwards as well. I'm seeing the improvements on Zwift and now its translating to the open road.

Was great to be on an actual road despite it being foggy and wet.

I bet that's a pretty cool experience when you figure out who you are riding with.

My next delimma: nice set of wheels or a power meter. Thinking Zipp 404 rear/303 front and not sure on the power meter.

Will likely end up with both but am leaning towards wheels first.

4iii/Stages left side power meter or a Power2Max crank and a good set of alloy wheels from someplace like November would give you a lot more bang for the buck than Zipps.

37.2 mules, 16.8mph/avg with top speed of 30.4 (I think that's my fastest) and 1100 feet of elevation change.

Overall a good ride and I felt much better than Saturday. Still had to stop a couple times but not as bad as the other day. Being sick sucks.

Also, creaky bottom brackets, that appear out of nowhere, and last for about 37 miles, are not especially enjoyable.

Take one out, try it, but don't cut your steerer tube yet. Go ride it a couple times , and see if you get neck, or wrist pain. Don't condemn it on the firsrt ride, unless it's a completely miserable experience. Comfort is the main goal, on my bikes. I run the stem as low as I possibly can, with out hurting myself!!

Yeah, baby steps, but if you can currently ride mostly on the drops without back, hand, wrist, neck, etc fatigue, you should be able to lose a spacer.

I'm looking to get a new set of road bike tires to go with the new year.

I bought my road bike in Aug of last year and put 600 miles on it with the 23 mm tires that came with it.

Barring any frame/fork/rim width issues, should I just go to a 25 or all the way to a 28?

My road bike came with 25s and I switched them out for 23s.

Unless I had another set of rims to try them out side-by-side, I don't know if I could tell much of a difference.

I went from 23 to 25 on my road bikes. 25 is a little smother ride with no weight or aero penalty. 28 is good for gravel but a little big for just road riding.

I have 25s on a wider rim so they're almost at 28mm width-the extra volume allows me to run 85 in the front/90 in the back without pinch flatting at 200 lbs while having awesome grip in turns.

Very cool concept but as others have said you can do exactly the same thing for $120/yr on Zwift and a basic turbo trainer.

If you don't want to Zwift you can watch GCN training videos on youtube for free.

And with that setup you are riding your actual bike.

Lastly, this might be totally 100% wrong, but my perception is the Peloton live training sessions are more oriented to spinning types. It's probably total snobbery on my part but spinning doesn't interest me and most people I see doing it don't look like they'd last 5 miles out on the road.

Again, prob me just being a twat.

I'm a complete noob, and just bought my first bike in almost 20 years, a Craigslist special.  It's a 2013 cannondale trail sl2 29er, stock except for the wtb seat I added.

I cleaned it up and adjusted the derailleurs, otherwise it was good to go.  I did a 5 mile ride my first trip, then a 6.  Really enjoying it so far, the hills around here smoked my legs.

I lift three days a week and needed something more fun than jogging for the other days, this seems to fit the bill.  I'll be following along and hopefully learning something here, thanks.

Got out for my first ride of the year on Saturday. I was hospitalized Feb 12-15th with a C.Diff infection - lost a lot of strength and stamina. Wanted to see how I was doing and if I could ride. Wife and took the bikes out for an unseasonably warm afternoon ride and got about 8 miles in.

Feels good.

In my mind I'm ready to hit some 40+ mile trips now

Pay attention to what your body is telling you. There's a lot of conditioning that comes with biking. If you're doing heavy lifts frequently of course it's gonna hurt to pedal for an hour or more - it just depends on how much you're willing to tolerate.

And don't forget about the value of a recovery ride.

If you've had heavy work outs all week but still want to ride, go out for an easy high cadence spin.  That way you still get time in the saddle.  This should be like 1/2 effort, super slow bike speed, just spinning, getting the blood flowing, easy breathing.

I talked with my shop,  which is a Giant dealer.

It seems Giant has copied Trek's online purchases, so there is no real incentive for shops to actually have much stock on the floor.

Just realized a few days back that one of the BP medicines that I've been on for the past 5 years is a Beta Blocker.  Keeps your heart rate lower than normal..even when you need it to max out.  In effect I've been riding that last 2 years with impaired performance...I had always wondered how these guys ride at 175-180bpm when I max out at 155-160 even in a spirited group ride. Guess its time to have a talk with my cardiologist.

Good luck. I didn't really get an answer, but I'm going to ask again Tuesday.  My resting HR was in the upper 80s low 90s, so needed the BB to bring it down. I average low 150 on my rides though, and have seen as high as 191 bpm, with 180s being not unusual on a longer steep hill.  My point being that it doesn't seem to have affected my max HR (I'm 47 so this max HR is up above the published averages)

This is why I stick to pavement or smooth dirt.  Crashing as an adult HURTS.  A mishap I would have laughed at and bragged about as a kid is now a traumatic event that can affect my life for days or weeks afterward.

Had to back off for a while because I think I was starting to over-train along with possibly fighting a cold.

Have been resting more than riding the past two weeks. That said...

Saturday: 39mile beautiful ride at 17.2mph/avg

This morning: 15.3miles and 55 minutes of a Zwift 2x15min FTP intervals.

Will do core work tomorrow like situps, flutterkicks, etc and then rest again Friday.

Then Saturday............YAY

Local shop has a pretty good selection.  Figures last night was a Giant demo night and I missed a chance to check out an Anthem.  The shop guy I talked to today said he thinks they have a couple on order.  Probably April though.

talked to the cardiologist a few days ago..he agreed to let me come off the beta blocker for 2 weeks..I have to fax in a diary of my BP for him to check.  Went to War-Mart this morning and got a BP monitor.  I'll take a few days worth of readings with full meds then drop the beta blocker this weekend.  It'll be interesting to see if I get any gains on power/endurance with this.

I did something different today, I guess it's similar to hiit.

I did all out sprints up the hills and would rest on the downhill sections.  I really enjoyed doing that, it was a really solid workout that got my heart rate up, and I found my lungs were trying to keep up with my legs for once.  My overall speed was higher too.

I'm trying to build muscle (lifting) and improve overall stamina/fitness, I guess this is a good way to do that?

I've cut back my heavy squat days from 3 to 2 per week, I think that's helped my riding for sure.
