I'm in agreement. I press from the rack as well... but only for max weights.
When i get to the gym, I live in the cage for 80% of the time i'm there. so we're looking at 1hr of me doing bench, rows, squats, pressing, etc. If someone wants to work in, all they have to do is ask... |

Some gyms are more free weight/strength training oriented than others, and in those gyms you'll often find dedicated mil press benches. http://www.hunt101.com/data/500/grolymilitarypress.jpg It's kind of a single-use item, so "fitness centers" are far more likely to purchase a treadmill, elliptical, or something similar instead. That's all well and good, but I have no problem with people that are doing standing overhead presses in the squat rack. The way I see it, in order to do a good overhead press you either need to have it racked at shoulder height or you would need to clean it from the floor at the start of every set. I think deadlifting and rowing in the rack is kinda goofy though unless there's a space issue (as others have mentioned). |

You should do rack pulls from a treadmill.

I have a home gym with a power rack which I use for nearly everything, so obviously who's waiting is not a problem. The problem with using the squat rack for something other than squatting and "willing to move" is that most people will see you using it and never ask you to move.
The local gym near me Idaho Athletic Club is geared toward treadmills, exercise bikes, aerobics classes and machines. Their website homepage read "Affordable fitness for EVERYONE". Yet their free weight section is sparse at best and the thought of a space for deadlifting is laughable. I'm of the opinion that if someone joins a gym such as this, there's little room to gripe about curls in the squat rack, because anyone doing so, is exactly the type clientele this type of gym sells to and also a result of the free weight space they provided. I'm going to guess that anyone strength training in this type gym using programs such as "Starting Strength" "5/3/1", began doing so only after educating themselves in proper how to and have since learned gym etiquette and proper use of equipment. They certainly didn't learn it from a "trainer" employed by the gym. Now the problem is they're locked into the contract they signed and have to deal with it a number of months or years. Only thing left is to live and learn and shop for a better outfitted gym once your membership expires. If you're in a gym designed for strength training and someone is doing curls in the squat rack, I'd have zero problem asking them to move. Anyway, this was a long winded way of advising people shop for and choose a gym according to the style of training they will be doing. One size does not fit all. |

Just one thing though, if the guy in the rack is curling more than you squat.
Keep quiet and move on. |

I sometimes do benchpress in the power rack. The are two other benches which are usually in use and the rack is empty. I figure, fuck it. No one here, I'll use it. Though a guy was sitting around staring in the mirror on the rack the other day and I used the regular bench. No big deal but that guy annoys me. He'll camp a machine for 20 minutes, 18 of those minutes staring at the fucking mirror. You're 50 and not that buff, get over yourself. fuck.
ETA: "Hey, I have a strict regimen where I lift then weight 2.5 minutes" or some bullshit. Ummm, okay in that 2.5 minutes I can squat out 60 lifts (I only need 5 dickbag.) I had to walk away from that tard. Luckily, I've only seen him in there 2 other times. |

Nothing wrong with benching in the rack when you don't have a spotter...or the available spotters aren't capable of performing the task. That's what it's for.

Benching is a power movement. Power movements are acceptable in the rack.
If Jim Wendler is in your basement gym, tell your mom to stop letting him in. |
