THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT
How does it work, you eat 2.5 cheat meals a week or just every now and then slip some non paleo foods in? I really miss tacos and was thinking of just slipping corn tortillas in a few times a week. Even on my cheat days I try to stay gluten free. How do you do it?

This "primal/paleo" fad annoys me.

Eat what you want, just eat bad stuff in moderation. The real success of paleo/primal etc is NOT because grains are inherently 'bad' for you (yes, some people have immune reactions to specific things, but the vast majority of people don't).

Paleo/primal is successful because the majority of the foods they promote are not as calorie dense/nutrient empty and appealing as grains. (yes, nuts are calorie dense, but they're used in moderation... as all calorie dense foods should be, go overboard with any calorie dense food and you'll gain weight.) eat 10 servings of nuts, and 2lbs of beef/day... you'll gain weight ;)

Following their guidelines is a way of structuring a healthy diet... while some douche-nozzles call it paleo/primal and ride on their high horse for doing so.

But hell, if it helps people eliminate what are MANY MANY MANY people's weaknesses and sources of high, empty calories (sugars, grains, etc), then I'm all for it. What bothers me is when people use it as a badge of honor "I eat paleo, what are you eating that hamburger bun for? Don't you know it's bad for you?" Frackin' douche-nozzles.

So...what i'm getting at is this. If you want to eat 'bad foods' 20% of the time... pick that 20% of the time and do it. Don't over-complicate things. Eat healthy most of the time and be done with it.

I guess I'm a douche-nozzle.

If eating non-processed foods is a fad in your mind then I don't know what to tell you. There's also a lot more to it than just eating lower calorie density foods. That's a pretty silly claim actually since most people on Paleo eat a SHIT ton of fatty red meats and put coconut and olive oil on just about everything- not exactly light eating. This claim tells me you don't really know a whole lot about the paleo "fad".

I agree with the rest...eat the "bad stuff" however works best for you. A couple tortillas throughout the week isn't going to kill you. Me? I prefer to eat all my "bad stuff" on one day...it just works for me.

See RoG, you don't wear Paleo like a badge... Hence the lack of Douche-nozzlery with you ;)

I hear ya about the calorie dense foods, but do you see a paleo guy sittin on the couch eating a can of coconut oil with a spoon?... nope, but you WILL see an unhealthy person sittin on the couch munchin cheeze-its. =)

Haha, we'll I'll take that as a compliment. You'll get no argument from me- there are a lot of douchey people in the paleo movement.

While I don't make a habit of it I absolutely have taken coconut oil and olive oil by the spoonful before...yum

I may be an inky, but I ain't getting THAT ink

Also, here's one (of many) studies suggesting that grains aren't good for us:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez?Db=pubmed&Cmd=ShowDetailView&TermToSearch=16635908&ordinalpos=1&itool=EntrezSystem2.PEntrez.Pubmed.Pubmed_ResultsPanel.Pubmed_RVDocSum

From what I gather it's basically saying that grains can cause permeability of the intestinal lining- even in non-celiacs.

So the heart of the question is, how do you space your cheats, and to what extent do you cheat. I'd imagine that some cheating schedules can do more harm than others due to insulin levels. Would one large spike one meal a week be better or worse than several smaller spikes sprinkled throughout the week? Kinda like having a big slice of cake and ice cream one night, or one small chocolate cookie every night.

This shows gut bacteria plays a large role in this effect though?

The science these studies look at is usually once sided... gut microbiota and personal immunity play a large, symbiotic role.

My question is does this increased permeability actually have any clinical significance, regardless of the statistical significance?...

=======

Do what you want OP, it HONESTLY won't have a large effect one way or another. I like to have a Cheat Meal once or twice per week. This allows me to have pizza... (or tacos in your case)...

Unless you're a diabetic, Insulin levels shouldn't be worried about (unless you're a bodybuilder shooting insulin for bigger gains?...)

When you eat cookies, your sugar goes up... so does your insulin... but what does that matter whether you have a mild insulin 'spike' once/day or 3x/wk? (hint... it doesn't)

Elevated blood sugar a la diabetics is only troublesome if it is CHRONICALLY elevated... we're talking day in, day out for days/weeks/months/years.... this is what causes kidney damage and vascular damage (the two big concerns with diabetics)

Good questions that I don't have an answer to. That's why I try to be careful to say these studies "suggest" grains aren't good for us...

Clinicly I believe permeability of the lining is a symptom of celiac, is that correct?

Depends on goals and personality. I'm not the type of person that can have a little bit so I do better with a once a week cheat day. Getting ready for a competition I'll even cut that out. Find what works best for you using trial and error.

Kind of...

its a symptom, but a secondary consequence...

It's actually the immune contribution and inflammatory component that causes problems (actually decreasing the surface area of the small gut, reducing nutrient absorption)... the permeability is secondary to these immuno-regulated things.

Sorry for the derail.

I don't know in regards to a study that says once-a-week versus a little bit each day.

I typically plan to cheat. That's usually Saturday or Sunday for me. Mostly because I'm way more active on those days and I plan to eat the cheat food after a hard workout. That's also because I believe in nutrient timing which is broscience at its best.
