If there are no provoking factors, nothing that you can attribute the cramping to, etc... then it should be looked into––> Go to a neurologist if it's a major concern. I'd consider some magnesium glycinate (at walmart or w/e is cheap)... and a B complex vitamin... they might help if you're adverse to going to a doctor... Covering my ass: W/O knowing you, your history, etc I can't give real medical advice, but only some suggestions. ETA: Anyone who comes in here and says "eat a banana." you should kick in the junk. |

Sounds like a mineral deficiency. Try bananas and oranges for potassium. Be careful-too much is not good.[img]http://www.ar15.com/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif[/imgETA Junk will shoot back;-)]

I get some bad cramps at night sometimes, but it's usually after being dehydrated during the day.

Drinking water is part of the problem I'm sure. I know I don't get enough

Even if you believe that electrolyte deficiency causes cramping, Endurolytes suck. 8oz of Gatorade mixed from powder provides ~ twice the sodium and potassium of 3 Endurolyte tablets. About 6 years ago, Hammer cut the electrolyte dose in each tablet in about half - price stayed the same though. I haven't tried a Hammer product I like yet. Heed is vomitous and Hammer gels aren't much better. OP - are you getting exercise-related cramping or just random muscle spasms? |

I don't have to do anything. Just sitting in bed they will start randomly |

Whether its in the tissue or the blood I dont know. Maybe an excess of potassium could cause an issue with cramping? Darktide, ever heard anything like this? |

Drink more water or koolaid.
And, OP, I learned a trick years ago to stopping foot cramps in progress. Foot cramps seem to be a biofeedback loop. Your mind tells a foot muscle to contract, which causes a sensation that's communicated to your mind, triggering another message to contract, etc. Just like feedback hum in a microphone. So, the trick is to break that loop by sending an overriding message from somewhere else. And, for some reason, pinching the area between your upper lip and your nose accomplishes just that. So the next time your foot starts to cramp up, pinch that area of skin right under your nose as hard as you can. After a few seconds, the foot cramp should start to gradually diminish. (You can google this to see that I'm not just making it up.) |

In clinic, patients that have bad cramping like the OP we generally will do a needle EMG, (and maybe imaging) if its been going on for a while to rule out any major neurological issue.
For symptomatic patients, we suggest Magnesium (not overly supported by literature, but does work for some patients), B vitamins (supported by literature pretty well) as first line treatments. If these fail, and the problem persists, we will then start someone on an Rx for a calcium channel blocker... which usually works when the others fail..
Hydration?... might help, but I don't know one way or the other. |
