Damn it.

Hit an easy 185 on the overhead press then broke this damn bone spur on my kneecap again squatting 315.  Got an appointment with a knee specialist tomorrow down in the valley.

Yeah we got a few inches so far. Maybe 3? No big deal clearing that little. It was icy this morning though.

I keep saying to myself that I need to work them in but I never have time.  Or prioritize the time for them.  I even do a lot of pull-ups and I could substitute some weighted chin-ups, but I don't.  I did get a new pull-up PR today, I've put on nearly 10lbs over the last several months and I still got a double strict pull-up with 20lbs of added weight.  Oddly enough I found that I'm missing something in my back when I'm doing them, I had one pull-up when I was doing sets of 3 on my way to the 20lb adder that felt different, something in the back or lats really kicked in and I ended up about 3" above the bar.  I wish I knew how to make whatever muscle that was, do whatever it did every time, it was definitely a pull from the back so I'm going to keep fumbling around and see if I can make it do it more.

Nice squats.

I coached my wife on her bench press a couple of weeks ago (those who can't do, teach?) and got her to use some leg drive and tense up the core.  Today she did a crossfit preworkout of bench press 3x5 @85% and her core and glutes were tired when she was done, but her bench pressing really improved.  She's a fan.
Link Posted: 3/22/2018 8:54:16 AM EDT
[Last Edit: thormx538] [#20]
My biggest problem with bench is my fucked up shoulder. I dislocated it years ago at the AC joint, so its all wonky and subluxates. I can't really pin the scapula down, I've basically lost control of those tiny muscles over the years. If I'm able to physically pin my scapula down on the bench by setting up in a very specific way it's much better, but for whatever reason I struggle to get into that position consistently.

It's an issue on OHP also, but usually manifests itself as pain around the rotator cuff, not so much as an inability to get tight.

I really need to spend more time doing exercises to strengthen those stabilizer muscles around the scapula and try and redevelop an ability to control them. I find if I'm good for a week or two doing band/cable work, bench feels better. Then I get busy/lazy/forgetful and it's back to square 1.

Nice!

I had big plans for doing the same Tuesday. But after the 405 set I figured discretion was the better part of valor. 415 wasn’t happening. So I backed off and did 295x8 and almost died.

Upon further reflection of my poor DL progress - I'm just weak...  Or at least still unbalanced.

https://www.t-nation.com/training/know-your-ratios-destroy-weaknesses

Tells me that my DL is actually outpacing my squat - which is anemic - so I'm not sweating my DL #s until I get my squat #s in line.

ETA:

finished up week 7 tonight and it went well.

Met all the progression goals again and my shoulder didn't act up on the presses... even got in some light curls (just for SCW) without pissing off my forearm tendons too much.

On the above note about power imbalance, my DL is presently 150% of my squat... and for my newbie rank it should be closer to 100-120%.  So I think my legs are whats holding up the DL, especially with my hesitation to put my back into it at all.  I'm going to idle progression a bit on DL and focus on ramping up the squat.  What rang true for me was the reminder that DL is more of a push move than a pull... and I'm tapped presently at my push/drive max, which the squat should help.

Fell on the Ice hard about 6 weeks ago. My shoulder felt like crap instantly. Dr said to quit lifting for a while, big surprise there, LOL.
Had some X rays done, nothing broken. Dr said I had serious joint degradation. LOL...another big surprise there. I just kept training the basic lifts with adjustments in assistance and volume.
Been doing a bunch a physical therapy. Evaluated with a 50 degree ?(impingement) or something like that. Still a ton of internal pain, just had an MRI done, waiting for results.
I can still bench, squat and DL. Hit a rep PR tie (tie from 4 years ago) in bench during all this. If I'm still able to continue to do all of the major lifts, (Which I am) there is no way I am going to let a Doc cut me up, F that noise.
Just going to continue with rehab, prehab, therapy, lot's of recovery, smart programming.
Good Luck with the surgery SCW.
Everybody's making gains here, good job guys.

Finished the 3rd week of that Arnold program. Been making good progress. Only down 1.5lbs on the scale since I started/changed diet but things are rounder that should be and the gut is going down. So I think there’s more fat loss than the scale shows.

Found some deficiencies in the program and the whole second phase looks retarded from what I’ve learned. So I used the good stuff from the first phase and started building my own program, which I have a lot of fun doing. Going to start that tomorrow. Sticking with agonist/antagonist for now, adjusted volume to maximize intensity and adjust total time.

Meal prep is going well. Made taco beef, chicken with ras el hanout seasoning, and a Thai curry for the first part of this week.

It's a boy!!

I'm not sure if it's me sitting in the car 2.5 hours a day or my work chair but my back hasn't been doing great. A couple weeks ago I pulled 455x3 and my back hurt. Not muscle soreness but felt like it was a disk issue. After 2 weeks off of deads I did 5 sets of 10 at 315 last week and 15,12, 10, 10, 10 today. No issues. Its light enough I can ease it up and maintain 100% control and form, heavy enough I don't feel like a pussy.

My bench is slowly getting better too. I'm determined to get into the gym at least once during the week this week. Screw this 2 times a week shit.

At least I've been getting an arm workout at the range. 50 RDS of slugs a session with this

I don’t make enough to need to freeze/I don’t have enough freezer space to make enough to freeze. Between my wife and me we go through 7 of those a day. So I try to make 3-4 days worth and they stay plenty fresh. Day 4-5 is when they start degrading in texture a little. So I just make sure we get through the last batch before we start eating a new batch.

Pictured was about 3.5 lbs of 90/10 beef, 6.5lbs chicken breasts, 3 bags of frozen veggies, and 6 cups uncooked rice + seasonings. It takes me about 2 hours to prep/cook all that. If I did less variety it would be quicker.  But this is saving me about 3-4 hours of time not cooking a week. It’s about $35-$40 worth of ingredients and will last half the week. We each have a protein shake a day and breakfast(I’ve been liking the oatmeal/protein powder mix). So it’s actually a pretty affordable way to eat for us and our daughter is pretty easy too.

Congrats on the son! That shockwave looks like a lot of fun.
