Great information!  Thanks.

One question.  He appears to zero at 1x.  Is there any shift based on 4x or other?

A more "precise" way to do it could be to take a few longer staples and put four in close proximity so that you can take a quarter and bend the staples down to hold it. Then take a little torch and heat up the quarter real quick.

More work, but a little more "precise" then a larger hand warmer.

This is an awesome video, where Angelo from FLIR explains how to zero a FLIR RS Thermosight. This method carries over to all other thermal dedicated scopes as well.
