Looking at getting a Savage 338 lapua, I am looking at the Leupold MOD 1 6-18x40mm or the Millett Tactical Riflescope 6-25 x 56 LRS-1. Any pros or cons to either of these. Or any suggestions for a scope in the $500 range. Thanks

If you are going to be shooting the .338, you will be doing yourself a disservice shooting a $500 optic. I would grab a Super Sniper and start saving for a good optic to put on there.

ETA: I would consider at least a Vortex Razor HD.

I put a Burris XTR II 4-20x50 on my savage 338 LM. Under $900. If your budget is tight, as was said above, get the SWFA SS in either 16x or 20x. Have owned both. Had the 20x on my 50BMG before selling the setup. Solid scope, good glass for $299, or cheaper in the EE section if you see one.

This kind of thinking drives me nuts. Your shooting .338 and now your gonna mount a $500 piece of glass to it?? It makes absolutely zero sense. when it comes to big boy cartridges like a .338 setup the cost/quality of the glass should just about equal the price of the rig. If thats not possible either shoot with irons and start saving or dont buy a gun that is 40000x more accurate than you can ever expect to be on it.

Save your monies. At a bare minimum, go with Vortex Viper PST II. I think you are going to need at least $900 for an optic, especially something to do the 338 justice.

pstii 5-25 is probably the lowest end scope i'd consider for that rifle

Nightforce ATACR 7-35

That 338 will chew up and spit out $500 scopes all day long.

If you're not shooting at least a mile, why are you shooting 338?

holy shit that got out of hand. He can find a good long range scope for less than $3500.

Though I agree with the sentiment, the only reason to buy a 338Lapua is to shoot far.
If you are going to shoot far you need a good scope that tracks near perfect and can hold up to recoil. A $500 scope probably isn't going to do that.

If you can afford to shoot a $4/round rifle, you can afford a $1000-2000 scope for it......one would think.

I'd personally advise not even getting the 338.  I've seen this many time before.

If you can't be talked out of it definitely get a better optic than the ones listed in the OP.

I'm a Kahles guy, but lots of goo stuff out there at higher price points.

ETA didn't see how old the OP was so pretty much never mind, shoe up in active topics.

Ill buy the rifle from you when you sell it. just PM me.

Honestly though, why are you buying a 338??? get a creedmoor or grendel or .223 or .243?? what are you doing with this rifle?
I have them all and my favorite lately is the Howa mini action grendel. Sweet little rifle.

I'm not trying to be rude, I just don't know if you've thought this out. A range session to just practice with a few rounds will cost you $200. And you're going to be sending $4 rounds down range with glass that isn't great, making it even more of a waste of money. Why not buy a .308 or CM or 300 winmag? they are very capable.

It happens to me all the time.  I can't help it.  I have a Remington 700P barreled action that I was going to build into a budget beater.

One thing led to another and I ended up getting Beanland to do me a full custom build on a Defiance action and I already have another Nightforce ATACR 5-25 to put on it.

Funny how we can rationalize our budgets to triple or quadruple from where they started.

There are many people at my local range that own a .338 and have never taken it over 100 yards. I dare say that is more common than not.

I would recommend the OP get a SWFA to have a useable scope but not too much money tied into it.

You're not going to properly utilize that rifle if you have that mentality. A $500 optic on a rifle that shoots $5 rounds is wrong. Just sell the gun now get a 6.5 Creedmoor and be happy.

This was a Savage .338 Lapua with a 5.5-22X Nightforce NXS at 200 yards with a solid rest from a concrete bench.  Hornady 250s.

OK, yes, but I had higher expectations.  It was the second rifle I was sent to evaluate and it went back, too.

Mine likes 300 grain SMKs. Way better than 250s.
