[Last Edit: vlcakc]
I just picked up a CMT billet lower for a 204 Ruger varmint rifle build. The upper is a 20" Lilja 204R fluted SS barrel on a CMT billet upper. I am currently swapping it back and forth on another CMT billet lower with a Magpul PRS stock. The PRS stock works very well off a rest, but gets a bit heavy for this old man to carry around in the field. I am looking for a lighter weight fixed rifle length stock. The Magpul MOE and the Ace skeleton stocks seem to be the most popular. Am I missing any? The standard A2 stock is not an option for various reasons. This is what I have now:

Smoke Composites make a very lightweight fixed stock, but they're $pendy.

Look at the Moe carbine fixed stock also I run it on my varmint rig. Very lite I also run the large spacer bout A1 length total

How about Magpul moe fixed rifle

Remember the post-ban/captive state fixed position "collapsible" stocks in rifle length? That's my solution.  Light, not expensive, and accepts add-on butt pads, cheek rests, etc. Mine is a Bushmaster factory unit but everyone made them in the post-ban days.

Too bad the A2 isn't an option. Best fixed AR stock made IMO.

The Lancer/Sig carbon stock is just 9.4oz in A1 length, A2 shouldn't be much more as it's just an inch more of carbon fiber, and the cheek weld is very comfortable, much wider than other lightweight stocks, especially tube+ stocks like the Ace.  If you need some rise there is ample room to put a pad on there.

I always wanted to try a PRS but didn't like the price.  On my target AR I changed to a VLTOR A5 buffertube kit and installed a Magpul CTR.

Lightweight.  Works well.

It is a great option.  Once you place it into your parts bin, arfcom fertility will make it grow into a M16 A2 clone build.

I have seen it happen.

LOL...I have them on a lot of my AR's. Just did a 6.5 Creed with one. I just wish we could get a nice butt pad for them.

Is that an op-rod/external piston system on a .204 Ruger with RLGS?

If so, good luck getting it to run.  You're going to need it.

The furniture is the least if your worries.

I went with a Magpul MOE rifle stock.

The Superlative Arms piston system shown in the photo has functioned 100% with factory Hornady and Fiocchi 40gr VMax .204 Ruger ammo so far. No problems whatever.

This is strictly a varmint rifle not a battle rifle. It will never wear an A2 stock or grow into a M16 A2 clone!

Thanks for the feedback. Vic

An A2 stock doesn't make it a battle rifle and it's probably the best varmint rifle stock you could use, especially shooting prone. It didn't just fall out of the sky...it was designed for the AR platform and designed very well. But I get that it's not cool....

I certainly agree that an A2 stock in itself doesn't make it a battle rifle. A buddy has one on a RRA Predator Pursuit and it serves very well in the field. However, this rifle will spend a lot of its life ammo testing off the benchrest. IMO there are better stocks than the A2 for combination field and bench use. Of course YMMV. The A2 stock can be modified for better bench performance, but then you have as much or more invested than something like the MOE. PLUS when you get right down to it I just don't like the looks of the A2.

Shot the first groups with the new lower today. Wasn't too happy with the results. Five shot groups with Hornady 40 gr VMax factory ammo opened up to about an inch at 100 yds. compared to about 3/4 " with the old lower. The new lower has a Geissele Match Rifle 2-stage trigger set at something less than a pound on the second stage where the old lower has a Hyperfire single stage trigger set at about 2 pounds. All my other precision rifles have single stage triggers (some set as low as 6 ounces). Don't know if I will be able to get used to a two stage trigger or not. My cheek weld with the MOE stock is not as firm as the PRS so that needs some attention also. Vic

The ace Skeleton is nice but the LOP feels longer than the 13" advertised. I just sold one I had on my 6.8mm because it was too long for me.

Luth Ar is really light and really adjustable.  Set my buddies rifle up with one, was pleasantly surprised.

I love my PRS too, but I dont mind the weight

I have a Luth-AR.

Pros:
   - It's light
   - Adjustable length of pull
   - Cheap (I got mine for $100-110 on sale)

Cons:

   - Has lots of knobs and grooves for mud, dirt, or water to get into.
   - The cheek adjustment isn't really fully adjustable. You either have it just off the rifle stock ~5mm, or else you have it way above the stock. At least this is true with mine. I think maybe you could have it in the middle, but the cheekpiece would be constantly stressed by part of the stock that covers the buffer tube.

What about the Hera arms CQR stock?

PRS is probably the best versatile fixed stock.  I personally like the A2 and MOE stocks better but they are not adjustable

not mine..

ACE stock.

IMO the A2 rides a rear bag better than any bs cool stock there is, which makes it even cooler.

Im thinking about getting one of these for the same application. Looks like it'll settle on a bag well and is light and cheap. Anybody have one?

My favourite stock for bench or prone. I think they still make them. The hook really helps to tuck the butt into your shoulder with the off hand

I hate my ace stocks when shooting from the bench. My vote is for the A2 hook or the luth-AR. Or if you really want an ace get the JP model with the monopod.
The A2 hook just fits a rear bag really well and gives me plenty of room for cheat sheets to be taped to it. Yea I know we have smart phones with shooter or Strelok. I have not played with the Luth-AR yet it does look like it would grab everything if you did have to go through brush.

I wish ace would change their design just enough to have a place you could get a rear bag kinda like the A2 hook. Because when at the bench. When I get it sandbaged level I have to reach around my mountain of sandbags.

A2 stock with a rear bag rider from EGW works great.  It does hose you out of the rear sling loop though.
