[Last Edit: Finslayer83]
Ordered a .223 Remington sps 16.5" heavy barrel this morning.
Goal is to make a neat little M40A1 homage which I can toss my YHM can on and plink away. So far I've ordered / have: R700 sps 16.5" EGW rail B&C M40A1 stock Vortex PST 2.5-10x32 FFP TPS TSR SL 30mm rings YHM QD mount Random bipod (I think Caldwell) What I need: Bottom metal that can work with factory stock Harris bipod |

Why change out the factory bottom metal? The M40 had hinged bottom metal so the Remington set up will work fine.
If you were looking for a dbm I think PTG offers a drop in unit but it doesn't use AICS mags. I think it uses their mags but would have to check. http://pacifictoolandgauge.com/remington-700-detachable-mag-bottom-metal-dbm/10069-remington-700-sa-oberndorf-bottom-metal-bdl-dbm.html |

I guess I should say M40 themed as there will be much leeway taken here and there.
But I'm not in a rush on he DBM or stock - just in the planning phase. |

If M40 "mini" clone is your goal, then I agree...stick with the factory metal. Plus you'll save cash lol

Are the OEM hogue stocks garbage or serviceable ?

Id put it in an htg stock. If not then what is really m40 about it?

That will be better than the Hogue stock it comes with.

Fin. The Hogue stock is complete trash if you are going to be shooting off of a bipod at all. I just got an older .223 700 varmint for the same purpose. Rifle is good and shoots good groups but has 1:12 twist which sucks for trying to shoot much distance. My plan is to just shoot the piss out of it until I burn out the barrel then put on a quality 1:7. I replaced my stock with a stocky's long range composite. I think I paid 180 for an unpainted one. I know this isn't quite what you were after though for an m40 theme, just thought I'd throw it out there. For the money I am very impressed with the stock. Stockys is very good people too, give them a call if you have any questions. Hope this helps

I am getting the Bell and Carlson Tactical Varmint for my Howa 1500 Heavy Barrel 6.5 |

You may want to change the title
You want a M40A1 not a M40 |

I recently ordered a greyboe. I think made by the McMillan family or at least associated with McMillan. Significantly lower price point.

I've always wanted to build a m40a1 .223 clone, can't wait to see you finished build even if it's not an exact clone

Maybe a fixed 10x scope. Maybe an mst100? Lol swfa would be a good choice

I need an A.I.....

Quick question
Fully aware of the chamber differences in .223/5.56 - but have been told that Remington's have a very generous throat and that M193/Mk262 is shootable in these. Good to go or just stick to my .223 ammo? |

This is a cool idea. Looking forward to seeing the process and results.

I would stay .223. No need for 5.56 in a bolt gun anyway.

Perfect!
I've got a ton of wolf gold for plinking and will get some FGGM for group work. |

View Quote Also, I have the factory Hogue stock on my 223 16.5 SPS and it works fine. I wouldn't be so sure with the 308 but with the light recoil of the 223, it hasn't posed an issue with the gun turning in sub MOA groups with over 400 rounds fired using a Harris bipod. I have shot 5.56 ammo in mine and the big issue is the generous firing pin hole on the Remington bolt face causing primers to flow a little although I have never pierced a primer. I shoot mostly reloads in mine and it likes the Hornady 75 BTHP. They are a blast to shoot! |

That's good progress.
I forgot to mention that I was able to get my X-mark Pro trigger down to a safe and reliable 2.7lbs by doing some things the factory did not intend for me to do but it works well. |

At the range now.
She's a pussycat. Been dominating the plates at 300y and having a hoot at 500y. The wind is giving me .5-1 mil hold at 500 but I'm also shooting my wolf gold ar fodder. Need to get some 69 grain loads |

That is coming together nicely.
On edit: I see that you are shooting! I would jump right to a 77 grain load as you are losing some velocity with the 16" barrel. Mine shoots the 75 BTHP Hornady better than the 68 for some reason. If you don't reload, this is a great reason to start. You can make match ammo for the cost of the Wolf Gold 55 FMJ. |

Time is an issue for me as well but it does get dark outside
I have been playing with loading match grade 223 on my Dillon 1050 and so far I am having good success, with a loading rate at 400 an hour, and two five shot groups well under MOA. I wouldn't win a benchrest competition with that but for banging steel it works great. The best part about the 1050 is the primer pocket swager. If you buy commercial brass or get processed milsurp brass, then you won't have to worry about it and could use a lower cost press like a Lee turret or a Dillon 550. I have loaded some pretty good rifle ammo on my 550. Next I am working on a semi automatic annealer to reuse some of the brass that has been shot multiple times. You won't save any money reloading but you will end up shooting 2-3x more |
