looking at what glass to buy for my first serious longer range rifle. I just received a mcmillan A5 inletted  for a tikka ctr, I plan on buying the 24 inch 6.5 to put in the stock. Looking at glass I was originally looking at a pst gen 2 5-25 since I before owned a pst gen 1 and was pretty impressed for the price. I also own a strike eagle so I am pretty sold on vortex. At some point I plan on buying a razor gen 2 but im not ready to spend that kind of coin on an optic at this time with other things i have going on in life. Up until now I was pretty much going to go the route of the pst gen 2 but Ive recently been looking at a gen 1 razor you seem to be able to find them 1500$ 1300$ from time to time. i would be willing to save a little extra to possibly have a better piece of glass as either way down the line I would keep the razor or pst to put on a grendel build I would like to do in the future.

The gun will be used for precision matches, fun, and possibly a hunting adventure or two. Which optic would you choose and why?

This is something I would like to know as well. I need some glass for my 6.5 trends AR15 and I just found out about the gen 2 PST.
In know SWFA SS is always the answer, but it is good to have competition.

A Razor is always going to be better than a PST.

With Gen I Razor packages being sold at Mile High Shooting including a free Spuhr mount for $1699 I would go with the Razor.

Yes they are.  They are much improved over the Gen 1 but the Razor is still better.

My point exactly. I'm fine with PA scopes for AR's, but not for long range bolt rifle.

Im really curious to check out the new PST, but my guess would be the gen 1 Razor will still have an edge.

I'm thinking about just biting the bullet on the Razor due to the fact it will likely take longer to get a PST gen II through their mil discount program than it takes to get a tax stamp back.

If you send Vortex your DD214 or proof of law enforcement employment Vortex allows you to purchase 2 of each product category a year for 40% off the retail price so a Gen I Razor HD that retails for 2000.00 you get for 1200.00
only problem is you don't get it as fast as if you paid full price but if you can wait its a deal the Gen 1 Razor HD sells for what around 1600.00 so either you save 400.00 or 800.00

Looks like I will probably go with the gen 1 as well. The PA isnt really even on my radar I dont think it will suite my application well. However I have been seeing some deals on the EE for some burris and bushnell scopes, I might consider one of these as well. This scope will be starter glass mainly I would eventually like to build a grendel AR as well and whatever I buy will end up there. after I shoot out the barrel on my tikka I intend to rebarrel it and buy a gen 2 razor

The deal at Mile High is close to the 40% off from Vortex with mil discount if you factor in the Sphur mount. I'm thinking about going this route instead of the pst gen 2.

I hate you for blasting the deal everywhere. Here I was happy with the 6-24 pst FFP I just bought.

Paid extra to get it before Saturday's range session.

Excited to know it's the 10 MRAD turrets and has the Xmas tree reticle. Wonder if this was a later model of the 5-20 compared to the few other variants as it seems a lot of them only have 5 MRAD turrets.

Glad I could help

The original Gen I Razors had the 5 MRAD turrets.  After a couple of years they released the 10 MRAD version.  My friend has the 5 MRAD version that he got for $1350 a couple years ago.  These 10 MRAD versions are a steal!

On another note. This is going on Brutus:

Attachment Attached File

The guy I talked to a Mile High suggested the 1.35" spuhr mount - or the 1.5" mount if I wanted it a little higher.

I've got 1.45 rings now and a smidge higher would be preferred to enable the use of the cheek riser.

Not sure the 1.35 would have allowed for that much clearance to be honest.

Just thought I'd share

My Gen I is a 5 Mil turret.  I kind of like it.  It's really easy to see the click marks and be sure you're dialed in correctly.

That being said, I like the Gen II turrets better.

That is what my friends looks like.  I actually like it as well as the clicks are further apart so you don't double easily.  I liked the 5 MRAD turrets on my DMR too.

I have to respond to your comment here ... So you looked through the new Platinum series and your saying the glass was "ok"? The glass, construction and turrets on the Platinum line IMO is fantastic and on par with other optics in and around that price point ($1500-$2000)

Now if you are referring to their non platinum line then I totally agree with your comment .... They aren't in the same league but work just fine for their intended purpose ...

I was rather impressed with the one that I handled.

The sad part is that it is right at 16oz lighter than the Gen II Razor  That is why my AT weighs 17lbs LOL.

It's good glass to be sure.

My 700 in a McRee chassis with suppressor and Gen II razor weighs about 18 lbs. if I recall correctly.   I wouldn't want to have to carry it very far.

You've used the Gen II PST?

They're barely just shipping to distributors.

I looked them over at SHOT, and I think it's a wash between the 2.

PST Gen II has Razor zero stop and great glass, 30mm tube.

Turrets are lower profile.

Scott told me they built a CNC robot to epoxy-bed the optical elements in place for the PST Gen IIs and Razors.

I would put a Gen I Razor and a Gen II PST in more of the same class.

They put XD glass into the Gen II PSTs as well.

I have not.  I've used the Gen I version and was not impressed.
One of the nice things about the 35mm tube is the amount of adjustment if you want to reach way, way out there.  I was able to dial to a mile with a .308 (26" tube) on a 20MOA mount (I didn't hit shit. The wind that day, and other factors, like the round going trans-sonic, make that a real hard shot, at least for me).  I maxed out the adjustment, and had to hold 6 mils, but I could get there.  I don't know that the PST II won't do that.  I suspect that it won't.

There isn't a chance the PST II would make it as it only has 80MOA of elevation adjustment.

Looks like the PST Gen II has 20MIL total adjustment while the Razor Gen 1 has 36MRAD.  Counting on 6.6MRAD for a 20MOA base, your looking at ~16.6 MRAD you can dial in the PST II and ~24.6MRAD in the Razor Gen I.

Interesting, so after looking through both the glass is almost comparable to gen1 razor?

The big push for me on the pst over the razor is the magnification range. The price doesn't hurt either lol, but that's not my main drive budget is around 1500-1700 if need be I just want the best glass for the moneu
