Picking one of these up on Friday in 6.5, a gen 2. Thinking of cutting down barrel to 18, 19, or 20, and installing either a 15 or 18 inch MI hand guard depending on which one I settle on. Will be shot almost exclusively with an Omega on the end. I have used long 22-26 inch barrels in the past, I'm really looking for something more compact and handy.

Kind of defeats the purpose of 6.5 as you would loose velocity
Cutting a .308 down I can see but a 24 inch barrel is optimal for 6.5

You'd lose velocity cutting down a 308 too - the same 20-25fps/inch you'll lose cutting down a 6.5 bore.  I cut a 26" 6.5 Creedmoor back to 18" and lost 23fps/inch; still got 2650ish with a .6ish G1 140-class bullet.  It was absolutely worth the decreased velocity for the increased handling and shorter length for hunting with a suppressor and still had PLENTY for 1000 yard steel banging.

Why don't you just order a short barrel and keep the oem barrel standard in case you decide to trade it off?

For me at least, cost. A new barrel costs 400-500 bucks. I can cut this one down for 125.

Also, I already have a 700 with a 22 inch 6.5 barrel. So it's not like i'm new to the cartridge, or to long range. I have enough time schlepping my current boomstick around to know this is what I want to do. I shot mammoth with it this year and finished tough man division. Lots more schlepping vs 1K plus shots.

I was just thinking by the time I had it fluted and profiled lighter plus better quality it would be money in the bank for a competitive weapon platform. Plus you got a spare.

Either or. I wouldn't flute a existing barrel but that's another thread. Honestly other than a simple chop and or thread I wouldn't spend any money on the factory barrel of most rifles. If you are really going to be shooting it with any regularity you are going to have to replace the barrel eventually anyway and sooner with the 6.5 vs the 308.

In the grand scheme of things barrels are pretty cheap. Components are always going to cost more over the life of the barrel.

Can anyone help me out with ring height? RPR with a Midwest Industries rail and magpul PRS stock. Optic is a SWFA 3-15. Would .97-1 inch rings be good or do I need higher?

On my Vortex Viper PST, using 1.45" rings

Took it out for the first time today. Is there a way to remove the little safety in the middle of the trigger? Or would this be unwise

What bullet weight does everyone's rifle seem to prefer? I got some Hornady 120gr & 140gr and it seemed to like the 140 better. But I only shot to 100yards today, so not sure about once I get to stretch its legs

ETA: Thank for ruining cheaper scopes for me BTW. The Viper PST is so much better than the Diamondback I have on another rifle

I believe the only way to remove the trigger safety is by replacing the trigger assembly. There is though, a trigger shoe that can be installed. Sold by Delta Team Tactical Titanium Trigger Shoe

I use 1.45" rings for my Vortex Gen II Razor.  It should still be okay for your 42mm objective.

Lots of fun Saturday at the range. Here's the 12x18 1140 yard target thru my PST 6-24x50. Took a little doing for a novice shooter in a howling and gusty right to left wind but got it dialed. 12 moa for wind! Farthest I've shot the 6.5 RPR so far.

Putting mine back together.  I much prefer the MI rail over the stock rail.

Mentioned to one of the guys at the local IDPA match (who coincidentally is a FFL) that I really wanted one of these in 6.5 Creedmoor. He says if I can find one, Ill sell it to you at $20 over cost because Ive got none in stock.

Lo and behold, my phone rings this morning and its him.

Needless to say, I own a Ruger Precision Rifle in 6.5CM now.

And yes this is a tag.

Postal,

Did you have to mess with the barrel at all to install the rail?

Mine qualified, but good on Ruger for stepping up and fixing the issue. Basically if you pull the trigger on a live round and don't get a bang, be prepared for one when you move the bolt handle

Mine qualified, and I filled out the info to get a replacement shroud.  I don't want to think about a round not going off, then going off when I raise the bolt handle.

My RPR chugs along quite nicely no issues at all.
Although I have lost the tool from the back of the bold shroud.

Mine is a 308 with a 24 inch barrel. What I have found is that firing Sierra 195 TMK's I consistently get 1/2 MOA.
My reloading recipe is Powder: Varget 40.5 grain (or else ADI powder 2206H)
Brass: What ever is lying around
                               Primer: What ever is cheapest
Bullet seating depth: What ever will comfortably fit into the magazine

I have to admit I love my RPR and yes it is also my hunting rifle.

Anyone here put on a LRI bolt shroud? Any must do mods/upgrades?

ETA: Any good data books out there? Only ones I see seem really overpriced. Also, what all goes in them?

The Ruger website says if your Rifle is in the affected serial numbers that it would be best to get the replacement and use it.

Mine is on the list so I put in also.  I have not had a problem, but have only fired 50 round through it.
