[Last Edit: BuckeyeRifleman]
So I am still relatively new to the long range game. I bought a RPR about a year ago and have shot the hell out of it, probably close to 2500 rounds so far. At the time I bought a 308 thinking I wouldn't shoot much past 100. Fortunately I was wrong and found an awesome 800 yard range right after buying it.

I plan on swapping the barrel out for 6.5 as soon as I have the funds. From all the research I have done 6.5 is an all around superior cartridge in every metric besides brass availability and price.

That said, those of you shooting 6.5 does the 308 still have a place in your inventory? Will it remain a mainstay for the short "carbine" length tactical rifles used for 600-800 yards and close, or is 6.5 still superior in that realm as well?

I have learned quite a bit about reading the wind and long range fundamentals with my 308. I think it served me well in that regard. I'm debating picking up a "cheaper" 308 (perhaps the 18" Ruger American Predator + MDT chassis) to still fill the 308 role. Would it be worth it or should I just go 6.5 pure?

.308 is fun to shoot and challenging past 800 yds. If I need to shoot past 1100 or so I'm bringing the .338 out anyways. The TRG22 will get another .308 barrel when the time comes....

I will always have a .308 in my stable.  It's way too prevalent of a round to get rid of.  Remember, it's only 3 years until the new panicking starts with the election.

No way will I ever sell my 308. Enjoy my 6.5 creedmoor. 308 has more energy until around 500 yards, then the 6.5 starts taking over. Thinking of actually selling my 6.5 and moving up to a 338 LM. Since selling my 50BMG, miss a big boomer in the stable.

I don't shoot past 800yds so the 308 is all I use.  I have 2 spare barrels for my AI AT and plenty of ammo to shoot.

Until I start shooting at 1K regularly I see no reason to go with the 6.5CM/260Rem.

The new TMK bullets extend this to 1250.

But seriously, everybody wants a 308 in their arsenal.

I pretty much shoot just Hornady but looking at those TMK's, may have to gve them a try and see how they stack up against Hornady ELD bullets.

It is the Chevy 350 of the rifle world.

There may be many cartridges that do a specific task better, but few are as versatile.

I use mine to kill everything from coyotes to ground squirrels to elk.

Yeah calibers I'll always have in my armory, .22lr, 9mm, 45acp, 12G, 5.56mm, 7.62x51mm. The .308win/7.62x51mm round makes for an excellent general purpose rifle round and is easy to find. It's a NATO round. All my battle rifles are chambered in this round.

If you look at Hornady bullet offerings, you can go as low as a 100 grain bullet and up to a 225 grain bullet. Pretty wide spread of available bullets for the 308. don't think there are to many other calibers with a spread like this, but sure there are a few. Reloading for the 308 is great for it too.

By passed 308. Inside 200 yards 300BO, out there 30-06.
I thought long and hard between 308 and 30-06.
They throw bigger hunks of lead faster. Inside 800 yards its a crap shoot

It depends on how many rifles you like to keep around. Is it worth the money for you just to say .308 has not been neglected in your collection?

If you are considering buying another rifle in .308 just to have one, why not buy something else in a 6.5 caliber so that you can have two nice rifles? You are paying a lot of money to have an uninstalled 308 barrel sitting in the closet.

Beyond competitions with caliber requirements, about the only case I can make for 308 is if you want something semiautomatic to blast with. Everybody should have one of those.

As a hog hunting cartridge, a 168gr bullet in .308 does great job bringing home the bacon. I'm a big 6.5 fan (have a Grendel, Creedmoor,.260 Rem.), but I would not trust that cartridge with a shot through the shoulder plate on a hog or boar.

My reply to title, yes, yes it does.

I recently got to put 20 rounds down range with a friend's RPR in .308, and now all I can think about is wanting to turn my LR308 precision into a carbine with more octane because I have always wanted one and buying an RPR in .308 to take over my precision needs. One caliber that is more readily available and cheaper to find and two rifles with the same ammunition supply.

I will be devils advocate here.

I have 4 rifles in .308 and the only one I've shot in the last 2 years has been a USGI configuration M14 built on an LRB M14 receiver. And even then, I only shoot it to sight it in before taking it to events where other people get to see it and shoot it.

My other .308s are considered precision rifles and I don't touch them. 2 of the 3 don't even have optics on them anymore. I don't shoot factory ammo for my precision guns and 6.5 creedmoor costs just as much to load. For shorter ranges, my load with 77 TMK is flatter shooting, and while wind does deflect it more, it's good practice.

The .308s will always have a spot in my stable, but at the moment I just don't use them. I'm considering selling one of them, but being a custom LRB M25 it was my "dream rifle" back when it was built.

.308 is very easy to come by, componets are easier to find, it's cheaper to load for, and it will get the job done inside of a Grand. I like how versitile it is and it also does well in shorter barrels, which makes for a handy package. I will always keep at least one .308 in the safe.

now that being said I do plan to add one of those new wiz bang 6mm's soon (6x47L, 6creedmoor, 6xc, ect....) but that is more of a toy than anything.

I have a Ruger American (Walmart clearance $199) for deer hunting and a Rem 700 5r for F-class type shooting. I will be moving to 6.5C for any unknown range shooting or beyond 800yds. 5.56 ARs for everything else. I am also dumping my 300blk.

308 nope.

My setup has just been completed.  I think I did it right at least for my needs by not going into 308. I have 556 as main multiuse shooters and staples in my collection.  7.62x39 as blasters and range toys to fire cheap steel. 6.8spc if I ever need a LW gun with more horsepower even though I later made 6.8 outdated due to getting better stuff I kept 6.8. A heavy longer barreled AR10 in 6.5CM to get the most I can out of the cartridge,  and a LW 18" 6.5CM upper to go with it which brings the gun weight down to just under 8lbs naked and does away with any role for 6.5G or 6.8spc. A 300WM bolt for longer range in a carryable package with more horsepower. I think I have all my bases covered without 308 I think the cartridges that replaced it(6.5CM & 300WM) have more capabilty. I really like the way I'm setup and I put a lot of thought into it.  My only gripe is that I would like to add 50bmg to the stable just because I wanna.

I'll always have one, but I shoot them less and less.  Still have a bolt and semi.

6.5 CM is more forgiving, and lower recoil.  I never thought the .308 had ANY recoil until I shot 6.5 for a couple years.

This is the right answer.

I still have a couple of 700s that were built by a very good friend/smith that will stay as 308s.  It is hard to justify them for real world use.  They are a ton of fun to play with and I use them suppressed with the kids/wife.  No recoil and cheap Federal GMM.  Hate to get rid of them, not sure if I will ever get another Obermeyer barrel as Boots is getting up there in years.

Real world...6.5 gas guns are doing everything that needs to be done out to 1K or so.

6 Creed is dominating the competition circuts.  GA Precision has some great options in this.

Beyond 1K, 300 Win is fine and 300 Normal will be better.  338 is likely around forever but $$$.

This is why my next rifle will be an AI.  I want to be able to rebarrel it myself.  I have a pile of 700s and clones that are great...but spend serious time at a smith every time I need something done to them.

338 is like owning a 50 cal.  Its not actually that fun to use.  Expensive, LOUD, blast/recoil.  I'm not a world class shooter.  It takes me a few rounds to settle in and by the time I am dialed in, 338 has me smoked.

My MK 13 is about as big as I want to go.  Its hard to find ranges outside my farm that reach to 1K...much less beyond.  Ammo is still expensive and good brass is hard to get.

I may get an AI AX if I do another stint someplace that pays real money...it would be nice to barrel it up for 300 Norma but I can reach the end of my skills with 300 Win.

If I really wanted to improve, I would probably work on my reloading skills and figure out the finer points of case/bullet prep.

Now if LaRue would make a 6.5 Creed barrel for the TOBR.
