I just picked up an 18" gong from grizzlytargets to attempt some mile + shots with the TRG-42 in .338LM that I just picked up.  It'll be right at or slightly smaller than MOA depending on the range.  Should I try and find a slightly larger piece of steel (Maybe not AR500...but at that range it shouldn't matter)?

I try to stay with at least 1MOA target size. 2MOA is better for those nasty long distances. It's a lot easier to correct for a sloppy hit on a 2MOA target than a complete miss on a 1MOA target. That said, a 40-something inch wide circle is a lot of steel to hump around. The 18" gong might not be perfect but it'll work out to 2k if you and your kit are up to the task.

A torso would be something like THIS 20 x 40 silhouette.

Or maybe just a large square steel plate >>> 30 x 40 gong

Just had my local target guy cut me a 36 inch by 36 inch 3/8 Ar500 steel square with holes in each corner.  Also came up with a pipe stand to hold it.

Figure that will get me to 2000 yards pretty easily.     8 inch painted spot.   Cut a stenceil for 4 inches if I get better.
