I'm looking to get a new set of dies for loading  the Hornady ELD-X bullets. I saw that Hornady has a seating stem specifically designed for the ELD type bullets. Has anyone had any issues seating these with standard dies? PSA has a deal on RCBS competition dies but looking closely at the stem it seems it may not fully cup the point on the ELD bullets. Can anyone tell me if they have used one of these dies on this type bullet and to what end?

I had to polish my redding seating stem for them just a little bit using a bullet and some valve grinding compound.  Had a little bit of a ring using them before that.

"Cup the point"? All you need is the stem to not touch the point. You want contact down on the ogive not the point.

With that said go with the Forster Ultra or Redding Competition seaters. I have both and they both seat very pointy bullets with no problems.

The Hornady insert is for their dies only.

Redding makes replacement micrometers for their standard dies in Reg or VLD bullets
Redding has VLD stem for their Competition Seater Dies.
Wilson has VLD drifts for their Seater Dies.

You can clean up Forster stem with a scotch brite green pad.

I have the Hornady Custom dies.  In my 30-06, using the seating stem that comes with them, they would leave an indentation around the ELDX bullets I was trying to load.  I also had several bullets seat crooked.  I switched to the ELDX seating stem and both issues disappeared.  I then started using Berger bullets and the seating stem worked fine for them too.

My Lee dies work just fine on 143 ELD-X. No dents, scuffs, etc

I pulled out my stem and seating punch and centered it and drilled it out a little.  This relieved the area where the tip would touch the top before the tapered body of the bullet did.  i then polished the tangent where the drill hole was and now im not marking the bullets.  my run-out gauge shows the improvement.

I've noticed the ring around the bullet on the finished round, but I've not had any issue with runout. And so far, I'm shoot accurate enough so I don't see the point in changing. How much are the seating stems running?

Will the Amax seating stem work with the new ELD-X's?  Midway has many Hornady stems available, each listing a specific bullet type.....

Thank you for that list, very helpful.

Are the stems stamped/marked so they're easy to keep track of?

I seated 15 rounds of 178 ELD this afternoon, with my RCBS, and didn't see any ill effects.
