I have a couple boxes left of the 52 grain HPM ammo from Black Hills, but I'd like to try to replicate it using my own brass/bullets since I love how they shoot in my 20" AR.  First thing I'll need is the bullets, but I can't seem to figure out exactly which they use... Speer, Hornady, Berger, etc..  Anybody know?

Thanks for the help.

They use Hornady and/or Sierra bullets. Widener's has 6000 bullet boxes of Hornady hpbt match bullets with canelurres on sale right now for $510.00 plus shipping. That works out to 8.5 cents each. Great deal on a good bullet for short range accuracy.

I use faster powders when loading these light weight bullets.

H322
LT-32
AA-2105
RE-10X

I adjust powder charges and look for good groups between 2900 fps and 3000 fps from 20" AR-15's. I'll even use H4198 (20.5 grains) in carbine gassed rifles. It's a maximum load in my rifles, but feeds and functions 100% in carbine gassed rifles with excellent accuracy. It may or may not function in rifle gassed AR-15's. Port pressure can be too low in longer gas systems.

Thanks for the info. I've been reloading primarily 300 blackout and 9mm for a couple years now and am finally starting to run low on the good .223 ammo I have on hand, so I figured it was time to figure out what I needed.

First thing, go chronograph your factory BH ammo.  That way you have target area.  They use non-canister grades of powder, so that means not available to the mere mortals we are!
I would look long and hard at finding a ball powder to use, rather than stick powder.  Just to load in bulk!  You might need to play with the different brands of primers, as in rifle loads
they do impact accuracy!

There was a time when H322 ruled the bench rest world back when 222 Rem was king before the advent 22 PPC and 6 PPC.  H322 or N133 ought give you fine accuracy potential.

Only thing I would change is to add RE-7 to the list. I am shooting 21.5 gr behind a 52 gr SMK and it has shot well to excellent in everything I have tried it in including a 26" WOA with the extended gas tube. It is the first load I try in anything for accuracy.

I'm using 26.0 grains of H-4895 behind the Berger Flat Base 52 or Sierra 52 SMK.  Cases are Lapua Match.  Very good accuracy (1/2 MOA with the limiting factor being me).  Not a max load, but not far off and in a nice wide node in my 16" Lilja.

What oal are you using with it? Are you using a Lee fcd on them as well?

No crimp, 2 thousands neck tension, 2.26 oal (max mag length, sometimes 2.25). velocity is around 3000 fps

Well, I finally got a chance to take a bit of time away from the aggravation of life to check the velocity on the Black Hills 52 grain HP and then try to make some of my own.  It was a relatively short time, but I found out a little bit of info.

Using a Beta Master chronograph the Black Hills 52 grain had a 5-shot average of 3075 from a 20" RRA barrel with a YHM Phantom can screwed on the end of it (about 10' from the muzzle).  The temp was right at 40 degrees, fwiw.  The ES was around 90, which seemed a bit high to me, but it is what it is.

I'd read of many folks having good luck with CFE 223 (and that's all I had on hand besides some H4198 and IMR4198) as I haven't picked up any RE-7 or H322 yet to try, but 27.5 grains with a light crimp in cases that were trimmed around 1.75" didn't turn out but around 2850 fps average.  I expected them to be a bit faster than that, and I know I'm not anywhere near max load, but really expected it to be pushing 2950.  I'll up the charge to 28.0 and try again once I have some more time, but with my wife being sick recently and still not doing great (diverticulitis), potentially moving 1400 miles away for a new job, not sure when that'll happen.  I do need to pick up some H332 and/or RE-7, though, as soon as I can.

I have had excellent results on target using 20.6 grains of H4198 with 52/53 grain match bullets in .223. This is a maximum load in my rifles producing 3177 fps from a 26" bolt action.

The only downside is it may not function in a newer rifle gassed upper. It's been 100% for me with carbine and mid-gassed uppers as well as used 20" rifle gassed barrels. Brand new barrels that aren't broken in yet may not run with this powder/bullet combination.

23.0 to 23.5 grains of H322 works great too.

Other powders to consider are:
AA-2015
VihtaVouri N133
RE-10X
IMR-8208-XBR
H4895
Benchmark

23 of AA 2015 and either the hornady or speer 52 shoot under an inch in my 20" AR's, and at right around 3000fps.

My standard MOA All Day load is the 52 gr Nosler Custom Comp loaded towards the upper end with W748.  OAL is 2.23" I believe.

I have been using H-4895 with Berger flat base 52s for very tight groups on the order of 1/2 MOA with a carbine gas system barrel.  I just snagged some LT-32, which is supposed to be benchrest powder for 6PPC and ought to perform well with light .223 bullets.   Do you mind telling me what load you settled on with the LT-32, as there is not a lot of published data out there for it beyond what is published by Accurate.  Of course, I will start low and work up.  Looks like 24.0 grains is the upper end for 5.56 pressures, but that's not what I'm trying to achieve.   It is benchrest accuracy I seek, not max velocity.

I have had good results around 21.5 gr with Sierra 52 gr smk. Velocity in 3000 fps range IIRC.

For LT-32 that looks good, about one grain above the low end for .223 loads and well below max.  I'll start a bit lower and work up to it with the Berger 52's and see how it does.  Thanks.

H322 was a favorite of mine for anything from 40grn Vmax to 52-53grn HPBT.

And it measures BEAUTIFULLY from a powder throw.   No need to trickle up or anything as that crap flows lime water.

Just approach it as an OCW type of loading methodology and you will find something.

I had a 50grn Vmax loading with H322 that was sub MOA with mixed brass and just slappin that powder in as fast as I could operate the powder throw handle.
