Using a Savage 10/110 FCP HS Precision with a 26" barrel:

300gr Berger Hybrid OTM Tacticals worked very well with N570. The charge I settled on (90.1gr, 2710fps, 0.62") is well above Vihtavuori's published maximum, but a few grains below what is typically reported on the internet . . . so proceed very carefully lol. Couldn't get a usable load using IMR7977, getting pressure signs at relatively low charge weights.

250gr Berger Hybrid OTM Tacticals worked very well with IMR7977. 89.9gr produced 2812fps and 0.45" to 0.86" 3-shot test groups.

Neither load has been refined any further and any problems I had may be related to the Savage chamber, but I do plan to continue with the 300gr bullets and N570.

Along the way I discovered none of my supposed "universal" reloading equipment handles 338LM. Special loading trays, a larger decapper, and various pilots were needed to handle the caliber.

Thanks for the reply. Am just starting my research into bullets, powders and brass etc., to get an idea my costs. Looked at commercial ammo to get a feel on prices too. Glad I reload. Dam those prices are nuts. But, then again, 50BMG wasn't cheap either. This rifle will be target shooting only (for now anyways). Reading different articles on distant shooting and stuff. Have all winter to get ready to hit the range in the spring so taking my time to pick what I want.

Already priced Lapua brass. $260 for 100. I used Lapua brass for load development for my 308. Then switched to hornady when I found my node. From what I hear on 338LM, most brass except Lapua suck for any shooting. I usually like to find a great commercial round to mimic reloading. Any suggestions?

From what I have been reading so far, H1000 seems to be real good for target shooting. Anyone try the Hornady 285 ELD-M bullet yet? BC G1-.879 G7-.417. Looked at the Berger 300 Hybrid, G1-.818. May have to check Lehigh

91-92 gns of Retumbo under a pointed Berger 300 using Lapua brass and Federal primers.

Shooting this load out of an Accuracy International PSR.  We routinely shoot out past 1,500-2,000 yards at the NRA Whittington Center in NM.

That place will be on my list of things to try. Thanks for posting. When I had my 50BMG, a friend of mine tried to get me to go down there to compete. I had a 22 inch barrel so wasn't even going to try against folks with 30+ inch long barrels. At least with a 26 inch barrel on my 338, I may have a tiny chance. Will be trying different loads this summer doing load development and getting chrono data. Is there a schedule posted for that place for when they do 338 matches? Would like to find closer places to Minnesota to try first so I don't embarrass myself if/when I do make it down there. Will look into Retumbo. Thanks

I've been burning RL33 out of my AX. I'm at 97.0 grains with 300gr Berger Hybrids and Lapua brass.

With the .338 Lapua, the good brass matters. Just plan on the Lapua brass vs trying to chase anything else as you'll be disappointed and out a lot of money per shot experimenting.

Already planning to spend the bucks on lapua brass. On the hunt for retumbo.

I've had good luck with IMI brass and 300gr SMK's

I had pretty good accuracy with IMR 4350 but I didn't like the case fill density left a lot of air space. I have some IMR 7966 to try hopefully it will be better.

Just ordered some Lapua brass along with a few other things needed to reload 338. Picked up Retumbo and H1000 today locally. Rifle arrives next wednesday.

I'm doing some load development right now as well. I'm having some pressure issues that I believe might be related to the way Savage did the chamber.

Typically, I've seen:

H1000 (83-92gr)
300SMK or Berger
Lapua brass

I'd recommend checking your COAL/CBTO and making sure you're not on the lands, or just do 3.690" to be safe (though the SMK and Berger's are a fair bit different lengths).

Always check each bullet for distance to the lands. Just got my order in of 285 ELD-M bullets and finally found Fed 215m primers so tomorrow I start reloading. Have heard of savage having tight chambers. Will post what I find out of the 285's and also have some 250 bergers too.

We need this pinned for 338 loads! If you have a 338, chime in! I start reloading today.

Checked the Hornady 285 ELD-M to the lands. 3.786 so loaded 3.766. Still fits in magazine by a hair.

I have been using:  IMR 7828,  90 grs,   Hornady 250 gr BTHP,  winchester magnum primers, and using Hornady brass.  Just started reloading for the 338 LM last year and haven't tried anything else yet.   How many reloads should I expect from the Hornady Brass?

This.  RL33 for 300g, Retumbo for 250, H1000 as a backup but you will probably not get the velocity that you may want.....but hey, if it's all you can get its better than nothing.....just sayin' as they say.

Thanks. Had good luck with RL-17 for my 6.5 creedmoor I used to have. May try it after I finish load development with retumbo and  H1000.

Got to the range today. 60 degrees in February in Minnesota is just nuts. Anyways, if any of you guys shoot retumbo or H-1000, check my highest loads and fps and tell me if I am pushing it or not. Retumbo seems to be 100 fps high than whats in the hornady manual. Highest load of retumbo was 92.0 gr @2825.95. Highest load with H-1000 was 88.6 gr @2719.62. H-1000 seems to be spot on with the manual. Slight case swipes, primers looked good. Both loads seem to open up more at my highest loads. Thinking barrel heat contributed to it. Thinking of going a little higher, but not much. Both loads were not max load per hornady manual. Load 0.5 gr between sets of 5. Thinking if I go higher to go 0.3 between sets. Suggestions/opinions?

97.0 of RL33 with the Hornady 285 ELD has provided the best groups for me out of my Savage.  I haven't shot the rifle since last November however and haven't put the chrono to them yet.

Nice. If you ever chrono it, please let me know. Since you live in Utah, question for you. Someone told me there is a 1 mile challenge out there. True? Would be closer for me than going to New Mexico if true.

Got out to the range yesterday. Bottom right is with 91.8 gr of H-1000 @2828 fps. Good day at the range.
