Hey all,

Where I will be able to hunt this year limits me to shots less than 15 yards.  Is there any reason for me not to zero my pins for 10, 20 and 30 yards.  Even if I had more acres to hunt I wouldn't feel comfortable taking a 40 yard shot.

Just wondering.  Again, this will be my first year usig a bow so I need some advice!

If I were in your position, I would sight in for those ranges. Any closer spread, and your pins would probably be too close and clutter things up. It's good that your being realistic and ethical about your ability.

My sight has 5 pins. I have them sighted in for 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60 yards. Last year I limited myself to my 20-40 yard pins. Practiced everyday. This year, I'm only shooting once or twice a week. I'm limiting myself to my 20 and 30 yard pins. I still practice out to 60 yards, but wouldn't consider it an ethical shot based on my performance so far.

I am probably a minority here but I have 2 pins only: 20 and 40yds. Any other distances I use a low or high aiming point.

If I were hunting Elk or moose -with a bigger killing zero- I would use 50 and 60yd pins, but for whitetails from where I hunt (18-20 yd high stands) the killing zone at those angles preclude me from shooting any farther

Wow, that's a high stand.  Around here 25 FEET is high.  I bet you have never been winded that high.

Our bow season opens next Tues Oct 1st and goes on to opening of gun season in mid Nov, but deer activity seems to pick up around the first week in Nov

May all your arrows meet their targets

I use 20/30/40 yd pins... around here you are very lucky if you can get a clean shot from 40yds... I hunt some pretty thick woods.

opening day is this Saturday... I'm on vacation for the next 9 days.

If I were you, Id only use 2 pins. One from 0-20, and one from 20-40.. Shoot at all ranges and no your hold points.. The more pins the more confusing it gets, at least for me.. Im in a similar situation, I only have one shooting lane that allows for 23 yard shot, everything else is about 15.. Make sure you practice shooting from an elevation as well, things can get tricky with angles..
