THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT I would like some comments on what happened with my shot since I really don't know. I have one kill to my credit, opening day this year I took my first shot on a deer at 10 yards from the level ground. It was a 100 pound dressed spike. I used an original Spitfire mechanical that I sharpened. It made an entry wound and a huge exit would and the broadhead cleanly penetrated both rib cages and when through rib bone on both sides, but the arrow did not pass through. It got stuck on the fletching because I could see the lighted knock on my side leave with the deer. There was a huge blood trail very easy to follow. The shot was further back than I wanted and when I gutted him, I didn't think to look to see what organs had been hit so I don't know, but the inside was full of very gritty bloody stuff. When I found him, blood was bubbling out the top of the wound which was the entry wound. The arrow got pulled out or fell out about 50 feet into his run. While recovering the animal I thought my GPS had said 450 yards and at night crawling through the swamp for 2 hours it felt like a long long ways, but the reality was that it was 150 yards and then he laid down and bled out. Feet straight out, just like my dog goes to sleep. Questions: Why did the arrow make a huge exit wound through the rib cage but not pass through? Is that a problem? It seems to me that at 10 yards and 62 pounds, the 400 grain arrow combo should have gone clean through the rib cage. What was the gritty blood on the inside? What organ was probably hit to produce the grit?Stomach? Is blood bubbling up from wound indicative of a lung hit. Does feet straight out on his side laying down in the open indicate he didn't crash but laid down to bed and bleed out? I wish I had looked around inside more, but I had been up hunting before dawn, out all day with nothing to eat and it was 11 PM when I was gutting him, which I had never done before and was tired as shit. Thanks for any info. |

That would be the easiest place to start looking. My combination is similar to yours (58lbs 426 grn arrow) and have gotten all pass throughs with spitfires.
